Are you interested in exploring the natural lands in Mercer County? Do you have a special interest in nature and love diving into the woods to explore the wildlife and ecology? The Naturalist Division has four unique opportunities for future environmentalists and educators to help with upcoming summer programming.
 Seasonal Naturalist (2)
The Mercer County Park Commission seeks a Seasonal Naturalist to join the environmental education team in leading nature camp programs at Baldpate Mountain, Mercer County Park, and the Tulpehaking Nature Center. Nature Camp programs encourage children to explore the outdoors during hikes through the forest, hands-on experiments, and nature craft projects. The seasonal Naturalist will be responsible for the safety and supervision of a group of 12-15 children ages 6-14 and one or two assistant counselors throughout the camp day.
Dates: June 1 through August 21 for 10-12 weeks
(Summer AM): Mon-Fri. 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. during camp weeks.
(Summer PM): Mon-Fri. noon - 6 p.m. during camp weeks.
Tulpehaking Nature Center Seasonal Naturalist
The Mercer County Park Commission seeks a Seasonal Naturalist to help lead programs at the Tulpehaking Nature Center. The nature center is the main educational facility for the Abbott Marshlands, a historically important area south of Trenton containing 3,000 acres of forest, tidal freshwater wetlands, and one of the most significant American Indian archaeological sites in the Eastern United States.
The main duty of the Seasonal Naturalist is to lead engaging environmental education programs on the weekend for scout groups, families, and the public, with opportunity for additional hours during the week for leading school field trips, after school, and other programs if desired. This position will also assist the Director of Environmental Education as needed, including but not limited to: staffing information tables at fairs/festivals, coordinating volunteer events, and trail monitoring. Weekend availability required.
Environmental Education Internship
The Park Commission’s Summer Nature Programs include week-long day camps and field trips for visiting groups. Each program encourages awareness and appreciation of the outdoors through various activities that might include hiking through the forest, hands-on experiments, nature craft projects, even fishing and exploring a lake by boat. The Intern will assist Naturalist Staff with preparation and clean-up of program activities and materials as well as supervise and interact with children ages 6-14 throughout the day. The intern will also interact with the public on a regular basis, leading programs and activities at community locations as well. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience educating children in a non-formal setting while increasing environmental knowledge. Full training will be provided.
