Happy Wednesday, Maplewood! The magnolias are blooming, the sun is shining - and is it really getting up to 70' on Saturday?! Read on for this week's Township news & don't forget to follow us on Instagram & Facebook.
On April 2, 2025, New Jersey American Water (NJAW) and Maplewood Township will hold a community meeting to discuss NJAW’s 2025 lead service line replacement program. The meeting will be held at Maplewood Town Hall at 7:30 p.m., and residents can attend live or via Zoom (details below). The meeting will also be recorded and made available to residents. For more details, read our full public notice, issued to residents last weekend, here.
April 2, 2025 | 7:30 pm | Maplewood Town Hall, 574 Valley Street | Join Via Zoom here. | Passcode:372589

Join us at Town Hall next Monday to stand up for Trans Rights. March 31st is International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV), a day dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness about the discrimination they face. (Fun fact: the day was created in 2010 by trans advocate Rachel Crandall Cocker, who joined us at our Maplewood Township Committee meeting last week!)

The kids are alright. On Monday, March 24th, the Township of Maplewood implemented the brainchild of a group of students from Maplewood Middle School’s (MMS) STEAM Tank Team, led by MMS Creative Computing & Design teacher Mary Alice Zavocki. The kids presented the now-in-effect SOLUTION 3 – their plan to implement one-way traffic at key times of the morning surrounding the school – to Maplewood Township officials from Dept. of Public Works, Maplewood Police Department (MPD), and TC Member Vic De Luca after their traffic-calming project was listed as a finalist in the New Jersey School Board Association’s state-wide contest: STEAM Tank™ Challenge. More recently, they presented to Mayor Nancy Adams & SO Mayor Sheena C. Collum.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, April 3rd. This will be a community meeting to present & discuss design concepts to reconstruct the grass playing fields at DeHart Park. The meeting is slated for 7:30 pm at the Maplewood Community Center (120 Burnett Avenue). Presentations will be made by representatives from Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc., the consultant engineers engaged by the Township.
Everyone loves a good yard day. Well, DPW does anyway. Our town's annual Spring Rake Out begins next month, on Wednesday April 23, 2025 - and ends on Friday May 16 (Mon-Fri only). Materials to be picked up curbside are limited to branches, leaves, and garden rakings (rocks & soil are NOT permitted) - and must be packaged as follows to allow one person to lift them (or they won’t be picked up):
- Branches must not be more than 4 feet in length and must be tied in bundles.
- Leaves & garden rakings must be placed in reusable containers (e.g. garbage pales/buckets) or paper bags.
- Approved material may also be brought to the Department of Public Works during this time period only.
In Maplewood Township, no one is allowed to remove a tree with a caliper of 12 inches or more without obtaining a permit from the DPW, regardless of the tree’s condition. All trees removed must be replaced with the equal number of trees or donate $375 per tree removed to a tree fund. Visit us on our tree removal page at DPW online or visit 359 Boyden Ave. for a copy of the permit application. If you have any questions, please contact 973-762-1175, ext 2.
Maplewood residents, come shred your papers, legal documents, private records, files, books & other personal papers. This service is strictly for Maplewood residents only. Please bring government-issued photo ID & proof of residency (a driver's license will cover both). There will be a second Shred-It Day on Oct. 11, 2025.

No one loves a good yard day more than DPW does.
Approved material may also be brought to the Department of Public Works during this time period only.
Please remember that the use of gas-powered leaf blowers is prohibited in Maplewood, for any purpose: landscapers, tree-cutters, roofers, pest-control entities, residents – everyone.
New Procedure Alert! Landscapers and tree-cutting contractors must register their businesses at the Department of Public Works (DPW), 359 Boyden Avenue. Registration and applications related to landscaping and tree permits will no longer be accepted at Town Hall. The DPW is the Department that issues permits for landscaping and tree work in Town, so this should streamline the permit process.
Request for Construction Inspections: The State has mandated that requests for inspections pursuant to permitted work must be made on line. Click here for more info.
The April 1 deadline is quickly approaching for Rental Registrations. Township Ordinances require every Landlord of any dwelling or dwelling unit constituting rental housing to file a written registration statement with the Department of Community Development. Click here for more info.
Summer is for swimming pools and will be here before you know it! Remember: any swimming pool deeper than 24”, whether it’s permanent or temporary, requires a permit. Also, make sure you follow the laws about securing your swimming pool to keep everyone safe. More information can be found on the Township website or by contacting the Zoning Officer at 973-762-8120, ext. 5602.
