We’re pleased to share that the new NJ AI Assistant is now live with enhancements requested across government, replacing the existing tool at the same website: https://ai-assistant.nj.gov/. (The old tool will remain available for about 2 weeks at legacy.ai-assistant.nj.gov.)
Why did we update the app?
We heard from hundreds of you that additional capabilities would help in your work to serve NJ residents. So, we rebuilt the tool to bring you new features and set the foundation for better, quicker updates in the future. Users also shared that they wanted more information about how to use AI and about the team that built the tool - that’s included, too.
What's new in the app?
The updated NJ AI Assistant brings a better interface and expanded capabilities based on your feedback and the latest developments in genAI tools. Along with previous functionality from version 1.0, this new update brings:

Smarter responses — Powered by an upgraded AI model with general knowledge through October 2025

Chat history — See past chats, and continue chats of a particular topic in the same conversation thread

Visible reasoning — Responses now include a "thoughts" section that shows the assistant's reasoning. Reviewing this can help you catch errors, verify logic, and decide whether the output is ready to use.

More control over your conversations — You can talk into it, edit prompts, retry responses, and revisit past conversations

Built-in learning resources — Guides on using AI and the app (including links to the state AI policy), and more information about the NJ AI Assistant (including who built it, how the data is stored, and its history)
How are other employees using the NJ AI Assistant?
We did research into how you use AI, and specifically the NJ AI Assistant, to better serve NJ residents, businesses, and others. (Thank you to everyone who participated in the survey!) You shared some fantastic stories about how you have integrated the AI Assistant into key projects, daily or weekly workflows, and much more. To share feedback, report a problem, ask a question, request help with prompting/using AI, or simply get in touch, fill out the Contact Us form or email us at AI.Assistant@innovation.nj.gov. Both go directly to the team, and we will respond to you quickly.
How is retention being handled?
Chat history is saved, and data will be handled in accordance with state records retention policies and may be subject to open records requests (OPRA). For questions about records, please contact your agency records custodian.
How do I hear about new features in the future?
We plan to release new features and improvements regularly. You can hear about them through this newsletter or the guides and FAQs page.
