NATURE & SUSTAINABILITY
Wildlife sightings from the public are incredibly useful to NJDEP Fish & Wildlife. The NJ Wildlife Tracker is a web application you can use from your cell phone or computer to report rare wildlife species observations and wildlife of any kind on roadways. Your sightings of wildlife on roads (dead or alive) will help NJDEP's Connecting Habitat Across New Jersey (CHANJ) team identify problem spots across the state - like places with frequent roadkill or at-risk species being impacted by roads. These can point us toward opportunities to build safer road-crossings for animals. Please practice “Safety First” in every situation, especially along roadways, and be sure to give wildlife their space! Report wildlife sightings via the NJ Wildlife Tracker. Can't scan the code? Preserving History, Expanding Access: $82K Awarded to Benjamin Temple House
On August 14, Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson visited Ewing Township’s historic Benjamin Temple House to present a ceremonial check for $82,000 in FY2026 state funding. The funds, secured through the efforts of the Assemblywoman, will be used for critical accessibility improvements at the site, which dates back to the mid-1700s.
“This is a big win for Ewing," Ms. Reynolds-Jackson said. "The Benjamin Temple House is a jewel of our community, and these upgrades will open its doors wider than ever before. Together, we’re preserving our history, strengthening our community, and making sure everyone can share in the pride we feel for this remarkable landmark.”
Joining Assemblywoman Reynolds-Jackson for the tour and check presentation were Senator Shirley Turner, Ewing Mayor Bert H. Steinmann, and leadership from the Ewing Township Historic Preservation Society (ETHPS), including President Joanne Durham, Immediate Past President and grant co-author Rebecca Urban, Site Manager Amy Karen Harter, and Linda Evans Brown, ETHPS trustee and liaison to the Ewing Historic Preservation Commission.
The Benjamin Temple House—listed on the National Register of Historic Places—is a rare surviving example of Georgian colonial architecture and a vital link to the region’s Revolutionary War history. It was home to Benjamin Temple, a local farmer and civic leader, and brother-in-law of Declaration of Independence signer John Hart.
The $82,000 in funding will ensure that the site remains open and accessible to all. Planned improvements include:
- An electric lift to provide first-floor access
- ADA-compliant walkways and designated parking
- Porch and doorway modifications
- Structural and aesthetic repairs
- Site design and painting to support these upgrades
Mayor Steinmann expressed his gratitude to the Assemblywoman and all involved:
“This investment in accessibility ensures that the Benjamin Temple House will remain not only a monument to our past, but an inclusive space for future generations to learn and connect with Ewing’s remarkable history.”
The Benjamin Temple House is located in Drake Farm Park and is maintained by ETHPS as a museum and community resource.
Stay tuned for updates as the restoration work begins!
