Ewing Unveils Hometown Heroes Banners in Heartfelt Community Celebration
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 23, 2025
Ewing, NJ – A chilly spring breeze couldn’t dampen the warmth of community spirit this morning as more than 150 people gathered along Silvia Street for the inaugural unveiling of Ewing Township’s Hometown Heroes Banner Project, a tribute to local veterans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
With proud families, neighbors, and friends looking on, 37 banners—featuring 33 men and 4 women who served our nation—were revealed in a ceremony filled with gratitude, pride, and reflection.
“These banners aren’t just decorations,” Mayor Bert H. Steinmann said in his remarks. “They are symbols of pride. They represent the stories of Ewing residents who served our country with courage and commitment. For too long, these stories lived quietly in homes and photo albums. Today, they live on our streets, in our public spaces, and in our community’s heart.”
The event opened with a Presentation of Colors by the Ewing Police Honor Guard and included remarks from Mayor Steinmann, Brigadier General Robert S. Dutko (Ret.), and Council President Jennifer Keyes-Maloney. Ewing Police Chaplain and Patriotic Committee member Gregg Downs delivered the invocation and benediction, and the chaplain also chaired the subcommittee responsible for the Hometown Heroes project. The ceremony closed with a ceremonial renaming of Silvia Street to Heroes’ Way—a fitting tribute to those who served.
In attendance were Councilwoman Kathy Wollert, Mercer County Commissioner Terrance Stokes, and Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello, along with many Township employees who helped make the project possible, including members of Ewing Public Works, Ewing Police, Ewing Fire, and other municipal departments.
As the ceremony concluded, attendees walked the newly renamed street, many pausing for photos in front of banners featuring their loved ones—or themselves.
“This project is more than just a tribute,” Mayor Steinmann said. “It’s a way for our town to say ‘thank you’—loudly and proudly—to those who have served.”
The Hometown Heroes Banner Project was made possible through the efforts of the Township’s Patriotic Committee, with special thanks to Atlantic Realty and Ewing Town Center for their support. Banners will remain on display through Veterans Day.
