Ewing Citizen’s Police Academy Celebrates 19 New Graduates
The Ewing Township Police Department proudly celebrated the graduation of 19 residents from its Citizen’s Police Academy on May 14, capping off eight weeks of immersive, behind-the-scenes education about modern policing.
In front of a crowd of proud family and friends, Police Chief Al Rhodes commended the graduates for their commitment to learning and community partnership. “This program takes time, effort, and a true desire to understand how policing works,” said Chief Rhodes. “We’re proud of our participants, and I’m equally proud of the men and women of the Ewing Police Department who take time to teach and connect with our residents.”
Chief Rhodes also acknowledged a growing concern facing law enforcement across the country — the declining number of applicants seeking careers in policing. “Programs like this one help build trust and interest in law enforcement. That’s more important than ever,” he said.
Mayor Bert Steinmann praised the graduates for their civic-mindedness and encouraged them to serve as ambassadors for the department. “You’ve seen the dedication and professionalism of our officers up close,” he said. “Now, you can help share that message with the wider community.”
The Mayor also extended gratitude to the management team at Marshalls of Ewing, the program’s generous sponsor. “Marshalls continues to show up for this community. Their involvement has uplifted Capitol Plaza and set an example for what business leadership looks like.”
Several past graduates of the Citizen’s Police Academy also attended the ceremony in support of the newest class, reinforcing the sense of community and connection the program fosters.
To the newest members of the extended EPD family: congratulations, and thank you for your commitment to learning and engagement!

Ewing Hosts Trenton-Mercer Airport Emergency Plan Review and Tabletop Exercise
Annual gathering strengthens coordination among local, county, state, and federal partners
Ewing Township was proud to host the 2025 Airport Emergency Plan (AEP) Review and Tabletop Exercise for Trenton-Mercer Airport, a federally required event that brought together a wide range of emergency response agencies and aviation stakeholders. The exercise took place at the Ewing Township Police Training Center and was led by Airport Manager Eric Billowitz.
Mayor Bert H. Steinmann opened the session with welcoming remarks, noting the importance of interagency coordination in preparing for potential emergencies. “We’re proud to support this annual review and provide a space for our partners to come together,” said Mayor Steinmann. “It’s critically important that in the event of a real emergency, everyone knows their role and is ready to respond swiftly and effectively.” Trenton-Mercer Airport is located in Ewing Township.
Under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, all certified airports must conduct an annual review of their Airport Emergency Plan and hold a Tabletop Exercise to evaluate readiness. The event walks participants through a realistic, hypothetical emergency scenario and allows each agency to discuss their role and response actions in real-time. The goal is to highlight potential gaps, reinforce lines of communication, and ensure a coordinated response across jurisdictions.
The session included representatives from various agencies and organizations, including Trenton-Mercer Airport staff, TTN Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) – Station 34, Mercer County Sheriff’s Office Airport Division, and Ewing Township’s Police Department, Office of Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, and fire companies.
This collaborative event ensures that emergency plans remain current and effective, and that all stakeholders are familiar with the plan’s procedures, key response locations, and the chain of command. In addition to the annual tabletop exercise, Trenton-Mercer Airport conducts a full-scale emergency drill every three years as part of FAA requirements.
Ewing Township thanks all participating agencies for their continued dedication to safety, preparedness, and public service. Events like these reinforce our shared commitment to keeping residents and travelers safe and ensuring that, should an emergency arise, we are ready to respond—together.

We Need Your Help: Keep Yard Waste Clean and Green!
Ewing residents, you play a big role in helping us recycle yard waste into useful, eco-friendly products like mulch and compost. But we need your help to keep it clean!
Only organic plant matter belongs in yard waste collections — things like branches, twigs, and leaves. No plastic bags, trash, containers, or other debris. These contaminants ruin the load and could send it to the landfill instead of being recycled into natural materials we can all benefit from.
🌿 Brush and yard trimmings = mulch 🍁 Leaves = compost 🟢 Grass clippings = should be left on your lawn (grasscycling) or bagged and placed with your regular trash — not with brush or leaves.
Let’s work together to keep our community clean and green. Clean loads = better results for everyone! Photo, below, taken Wednesday, May 14, makes us sad.
