Ewing Joins Regional Effort to Reform Trenton Water Works
Ewing Township Mayor Bert Steinmann has joined other local leaders in supporting the creation of a new public utility to manage Trenton Water Works (TWW) following a New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) report highlighting critical deficiencies in its operations. The report recommends an independent governance structure to modernize the aging water system and improve service for the five municipalities it serves: Trenton, Ewing, Hamilton, Lawrence, and Hopewell.
For years, TWW has faced operational challenges, aging infrastructure, and governance issues that have left municipalities outside Trenton with no formal say in its management, despite 55% of TWW customers residing outside the city. The DEP report confirms that the current structure is unsustainable and that a new public utility—free from political interference—would allow for greater collaboration and efficiency.
Mayor Steinmann and fellow local leaders agree that the status quo is not sustainable and are committed to working together to develop a transparent, independent utility that ensures safe and reliable water service. Priorities for this initiative include a full evaluation of the transition process, assessing financial impacts on ratepayers, determining fair compensation for Trenton, and launching public education efforts to keep residents informed.
As discussions move forward, Ewing remains committed to protecting its residents and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the water system. More updates will be shared as this effort progresses.
