As hurricane season continues into November, it is important to keep in mind Hurricane preparation for you and your property's protection. FEMA's National Hurricane Program (NHP) is an excellent resource aimed to "assists federal, sate, local, tribal and territorial emergency managers" in hurricane preparedness.
The NHP is in collaboration with FEMA, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the NOAA National Hurricane Center. The programming offers a wide selection of emergency management training, storm surge risk products, evacuation plans and research, and many other resources. You can also reference NJOEM’s Hurricane Survival Guide for NJ for additional information from New Jersey.
The New Jersey Association for Floodplain Management (NJAFM) is hosting their 20th annual conference this October 21-23 at the Hard Rock Casino in Atlantic City. The Resilient NJ program is providing the opportunity for New Jersey communities to apply to participate in a regional resilience planning process. Regional teams will be matched with consulting teams to collaborate on a planning process to develop their regional resilience action plans and later act upon them. Once all regional teams have been formed, these projects will begin sometime early 2026.
These plans should intend to increase community resilience, build local capacity, and allow local government to identify their needs and put solutions into action to address dynamic weather event threats. These plans may also incorporate elements of preserving ecological integrity as well as economic, recreational, and other natural resources in their municipalities.
"As many as six regional teams will receive grants of up to $300,000 each to improve climate resilience in their communities. Regional teams must be made up of at least three contiguous municipalities and at least one community-based organization; and will be paired with multidisciplinary consulting teams to participate in a comprehensive planning process to develop regional resilience action plans."
Grant applications are available now on the website linked below, and are due October 14, 2025. For more information and application materials, visit: https://dep.nj.gov/ocr/resilientnj/

FEMA has released an updated version of its Community Rating System (CRS) manual in 2025. This guidebook outlines program operations and other reference tools such as credit calculation, document requirements, and class rating determination.
The Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary program that incentivizes communities to exceed minimum NFIP requirements to help their citizens prevent or reduce flood losses. More information about the program and how to join can be found on FEMA's website.
