For 2.5 to 5 year olds and an adult partner. Fledgling Naturalist programs are designed to encourage young children curiosity, engaging them hands-on in the natural world through seasonally-themed activities, stories, games, and crafts. New this year: Arrive any time between 1:00 and 1:30 for free play (outdoors if the weather is nice, indoors if it isn't) and coffee. Story time and the rest of the program begins at 1:30. To register, email highpointprograms@dep.nj.gov or call the Interpretive Center at 973-875-1471. Registration is required by 4:00 PM the day before the program.

Thirty of the 51 rooms, furnished in the original items of the family, are shown on the tour. Tours last approximately an hour and 15 minutes.

April 21 | Spring Lifestyles of the Local Native Americans

ADA accessible. Jim Wade, former archivist and researcher with the N.J. State Museum will discuss primitive stone tool use by Native Americans in central New Jersey. Emphasis will be on the significance and importance of the Indian way of life during the spring season, focusing on the activities of community fish gathering, hunting and village life. The program will include a slide presentation and Native American artifacts will be on display.

Owls fascinate birders the most. Being nocturnal, a cloak of darkness surrounds them with mysteries. Throughout the year, 8 species of owls can call Hunterdon County home. Come out and join the Chief Park Naturalist Tom Sheppard of the Hunterdon County Parks Department on a program about the many owls that make Hunterdon their home. You will learn about the needs of these owls, tips on how to know if they are in your area and calls that they make. A mount and other artifacts will be on display

Shinrin Yoku Guided Meditation Walk in Nature with Roni Detrick, this guided nature connection walk incorporates the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, which translates as “forest bathing” or “nature immersion”. This practice reduces stress and promotes health and wellbeing through contact with nature using sensory awareness and mindfulness activities. Shinrin-Yoku walks have been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, elevate mood, boost the immune system and improve sleep. Gather for the walk at the General Store across from the parking lot. Wear appropriate attire for weather. This is one in a series of three Spring walks.

Photograph and Learn at this unique Pinelands landmark with award winning photographer, Richard Lewis. Whitesbog was an early 20th-century agricultural community. In the early 1900s, it was the largest cranberry farm in New Jersey, and nationally known as the leader in the cranberry industry. It was also where the blueberry was cultivated by Elizabeth White. Whitesbog is now part of Brendan T. Byrne State Forest and includes a historic village and the surrounding 3,000 acres of beautiful Pine Barrens bogs and forests. 
We will start our day photographing the sunrise from those beautiful bogs and continue throughout the morning. Afterwards we will photograph some of the buildings including some of the abandoned and historic buildings in Whitesbog Village, including several that are off limits to the public. Our day will also include some classroom instruction and review of the images we made.

Rain or snow cancels. Join NJBG hike leaders on an easy, child-friendly hike in the Garden's woodlands. Learn a bit about the plants, animals, and geology around you in a hike designed to fit the group. Smaller children may need to be carried. (pre-teen – adult (pre-teen – adult).  Participants will learn how to obtain information and hints from the Geocaching.com website, on the location of about a dozen geocache sites in the park. They will then use handheld GPS devices to go out and find as many caches as possible. Once a cache is found, participants typically will sign in on the log contained within and then take an object from the cache box after leaving a trinket for subsequent geocachers. Participants should bring a pocket full of trinkets to exchange when they locate caches. Trinkets can include small toys and balls, plastic jewelry, pens, pencils, scratch pads, patches, action figures, coins, etc. A limited number of GPS navigation devices will be made available to participants.

Note:  Partial ADA accessible. This section of the D&R Canal State Park is bounded by the Canal on one side and the Delaware River, separated by two large fields being restored as grassland/meadows. The combination of wooded riparian habitat, edge habitat and meadows mean that a large variety of birds can potentially be seen here, including early warblers, swallows, bluebirds, grassland sparrows, raptors and wood ducks.

Explore High Point’s unique cedar bog on an easy two-mile hike with the park naturalist. We'll be on the lookout for early woodland wildflowers and for some of the elusive migrating birds that hide in the dense foliage. Meet at the Cedar Swamp trailhead located at the dead end in the Cedar Swamp picnic area. Suitable for all ages.

Celebrate Earth Day by helping to keep Liberty State Park clean.  We will walk along the beach and clean-up any trash that has come ashore. Please dress to work outdoors, wear old shoes that can get wet and muddy, and bring work gloves if you have them. The program will begin at the Nature Interpretive Center on Freedom Way. Parking is available in the lot across the street from the building.

Adults/Children age 10 and up.Come hike a 1-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail to an observation platform where we'll watch the sun set in the west while the nearly-full moon rises in the eastern sky. This hike is moderately strenuous with some steep portions and a rocky, uneven trail surface. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are a must, and you might want to bring water and a snack to enjoy as you watch the sunset. We'll return to our cars by moonlight via an easier route. Inclement weather may cancel this program.
