February 3 | Groundhog's Day Celebration

Bring children ages 3 to 9 to learn about hibernation through hilarious books and hands-on fun. Kids will leave with a better understanding of many of NJ's amazing wildlife creatures and how they survive during the cold months.

Stories, finger plays, and crafts will develop an awareness and appreciation for nature in children and their care-givers during this indoor program.

For 2.5 to 5 year olds and an adult partner. Fledgling Naturalist programs are designed to encourage young children’s curiosity, engaging them hands-on in the natural world through seasonally-themed activities, stories, games, and crafts. New this season: Arrive any time between 1:00 and 1:30 for free play and coffee (provided). Story time and the rest of the program begins at 1:30. To register call the Interpretive Center at 973-875-1471 or email highpointprograms@dep.nj.gov

Children over the age of five may not attend, and each adult may bring a maximum of two children (not including infants and with possible exceptions for parents of multiples). Registration is required by 4:00 PM the day before the program.

Walt Whitman’s Specimen Days

Better known for his ground breaking free-verse poetry, Walt Whitman was also an accomplished prose writer having in his early years published several short stories, editorials and a novel.  Later, while living in Camden, he published in 1882 a book of life essays entitled, “Specimen Days and Collect”.  This program will explore this notable work with a discussion of the author’s revealing impressions of the people, places and events of the 19th Century – an extraordinary period in American history.

For adults. Wind down your busy week with Hatha yoga. This class will help you develop strength and flexibility while relaxing your body and quieting your mind with guided meditation, gentle stretching, easy postures, and breathing techniques. Yoga mats & props provided.

February 11 | Lecture - The Paleo and Archaic Indians of New Jersey

Jim Wade, former archivist and researcher with the NJ State Museum will take participants on a journey back to the time of the last ice age, when the earliest Native American peoples entered what is now New Jersey. Discover how these Paleo-Indians lived and survived in an artic landscape. Learn how these earliest people adapted to their harsh environment and hunted with specialized Clovis spear points. See how these prehistoric hunters opened the way for new bands of Archaic peoples who followed, with new innovative stone tools and lifestyles. The program will include a slide presentation and Native American artifacts will be on display.

For adults. Start your day off right with a brisk walk to stretch your legs, breathe some fresh air, and soak in the tranquility of the season in companionship with fellow walkers. Complimentary coffee, tea, and light refreshments served afterwards.


February 3, 10, 17, 24 | Nature in Winter Walk

Fee: $2 per person for the walk, $5 per person to borrow snowshoes for the walk

Winter can be a quiet time, but there’s still lots to explore. While on the trail we’ll look for tracks and signs of wintering wildlife, observe dormant trees, plants, insects, and much more. Whether we go by boot or by snowshoe will depend on the weather. Adults/Children ages 7 and up. Registration is required. A limited number of snowshoes (child and adult sizes) are available for use during these walks, and must be reserved in advance. Please email highpointprograms@dep.nj.gov to register for these walks and to reserve your snowshoes by 4:00 PM the Friday before the walk or call 973-875-1471. Locations will vary.

Winter still has us in its grip but there are signs of longer and warmer days ahead. Dress in layers and hike the Cushetunk Trail. Winter hiking brings solitude and quiet beauty but it has its dangers. Learn the dos and don'ts of winter hiking. If snow covered, bring snow shoes.

For adults.Celebrate the winter season with a 2.5-mile round-trip walk along the historic Sussex Branch Trail. A one-hour breakfast at the Millside Café in Lafayette will warm us up for the return trip.

February 10, 16 | Tracks and Trails: Winter Wildlife

For adults and children ages 6 and up. We don't often get a chance to observe wild animals in action, but the signs they leave behind offer a window into their world. Come learn the basics about interpreting the tracks and signs of local wildlife. After this indoor presentation, you can either practice being a tracker in the Interpretive Center, or head outside on your own to complete a "Signs of Wildlife" scavenger hunt. If you're interested in a more field-oriented program, please join us for one of our Saturday morning "Nature in Winter" walks. ADA accessible. Learn how to identify some common animal tracks while we make a tracking booklet. We will make prints with paint on paper or you can bring a plain t-shirt or pillow case to make prints on. Payment is required by 2 pm Thursday, February 9 at the Spruce Run Office.

For adults. Experience the beauty of KVSP in winter with fellow nature lovers on this 3-mile hike, then warm up with hot chocolate and potluck in our cozy visitor center! Please bring a treat to share and Valentine card (bought, made, or recycled), and include a poem, song lyrics, or a favorite quote - we’ll put them in a bag and pick randomly; and/or please also show our Little Free Library some love by bringing a book to celebrate International Book Giving Day!
