Children over the age of five may not attend, and each adult may bring a

Better known for his ground breaking free-verse poetry, Walt Whitman was also
an accomplished prose writer having in his early years published several short
stories, editorials and a novel. Later, while living in Camden, he
published in 1882 a book of life essays entitled, “Specimen Days and
Collect”. This program will explore this notable work with a discussion
of the author’s revealing impressions of the people, places and events of the
19th Century – an extraordinary period in American history.

February 11 | Lecture - The Paleo and Archaic Indians of New Jersey
Jim Wade, former archivist and researcher with the NJ State Museum will take
participants on a journey back to the time of the last ice age, when the
earliest Native American peoples entered what is now New Jersey. Discover how
these Paleo-Indians lived and survived in an artic landscape. Learn how these
earliest people adapted to their harsh environment and hunted with specialized
Clovis spear points. See how these prehistoric hunters opened the way for new
bands of Archaic peoples who followed, with new innovative stone tools and
lifestyles. The program will include a slide presentation and Native American
artifacts will be on display.

Winter can be a quiet time, but there’s still
lots to explore. While on the trail we’ll look for tracks and signs of
wintering wildlife, observe dormant trees, plants, insects, and much more.
Whether we go by boot or by snowshoe will depend on the weather.
Adults/Children ages 7 and up. Registration is required. A limited number of
snowshoes (child and adult sizes) are available for use during these walks, and
must be reserved in advance. Please email highpointprograms@dep.nj.gov to
register for these walks and to reserve your snowshoes by 4:00 PM the Friday
