Pheasants to be released for holiday hunting

Thanksgiving means many things: great food, counting our blessings, generous servings of pumpkin pie — and good times with those closest to us.

To help with that last item, we will be releasing rooster pheasants at 16 wildlife management areas around the state before the Thanksgiving weekend, so you and your family can enjoy the fun of hunting together, with added chance of success.

The 16 wildlife management areas are: Powder Creek, (Dixon County), Oak Valley (Madison County), Wilkinson (Platte County), George Syas (Nance County), Sherman Reservoir (Sherman County), Pressey (Custer County), Cornhusker (Hall County), Kirkpatrick Basin North (York County), Peru Bottoms (Nemaha County), Randall W. Schilling (Cass), Branched Oak (Lancaster County), Yankee Hill (Lancaster County), Arrowhead (Gage County), Hickory Ridge (Johnson County), Twin Oaks (Johnson County), and Rakes Creek (Cass County).

This is your opportunity to make the most of the holiday weekend (and maybe walk off a big meal!). Buy your permit today and don't forget that we offer two-day hunting permits for out-of-staters — perfect for an occasion like this one.

And remember that time outdoors is time well spent!

During your hunt, work on completing the Upland Slam!

A Thanksgiving pheasant hunt is a great time to start, or continue, your quest for the Nebraska Upland Slam. It's a fun goal, there's prizes involved, and it's a worthy test of your hunting skills!

To complete the Slam, you'll need to harvest four birds in Nebraska: a sharp-tailed grouse, greater prairie-chicken, ring-necked pheasant and northern bobwhite quail. Enter at least one harvest to be registered for monthly prize drawings, and bring in all four birds for the chance to win the grand prize, a Dickinson Arms Hunter Light 28-gauge over/under shotgun.

Get your friends and family involved, and see who can complete the Slam first! Or, set it as a personal goal and see how far you can go. Learn more about the Slam on our website.
