Observe greater prairie chickens at Burchard WMA

Fighting prairie chickens

Wildlife viewers can observe the courtship ritual of the greater prairie-chicken in southeastern Nebraska. Twenty birds have been using a lek at Burchard Wildlife Management Area in Pawnee County.

To view the prairie-chickens, the wildlife management area has two observation blinds available on a first-come basis. No reservations are required. Viewing sessions begin one hour before sunrise so that viewers can get into the blind without disturbing the prairie-chickens in their natural habitat. Plan to stay in the blind until the birds leave the lek, which is usually two to three hours. Get more information online.

Morel report: Morels spotted in Missouri River woodlands

Girl holding a morel.

The first weekly Nebraska Game and Parks morel report is out now. In Cass County, a few patches of small, 1 1/2-inch gray morels have been spotted in short grass/vegetation in Missouri River woodlands near Union.

Additionally, small gray morels, ½-inch to ¾ inches in size, were confirmed along the Missouri River woodlands near Plattsmouth. It is still too cold for morels in Garden and Lincoln counties. Slow activity is expected in Otoe County this weekend, but the rain throughout the week is expected to help. Keep up-to-date with the morel report at our wesbite.
