Make Focused Driving Part of Every Trip
The moment an employee gets behind the wheel for work, that vehicle becomes part of the jobsite. That means driving for work deserves total focus, just like any other part of the job.
Distracted driving is anything that takes your eyes, hands or mind off safe driving. Texting alone can increase crash risk up to 23 times. Since the beginning of the year, using social media to watch or record videos while driving was a contributing factor in four traffic fatalities in North Dakota.
This is not just a traffic issue. It is a leadership issue.

Technology Use
Silence phones. Use “do not disturb” while driving. No message is worth a life.
State Law Awareness
North Dakota prohibits texting while driving and restricts device use for drivers under 18. Distracted driving includes any behavior that impairs safe vehicle operation.
Reinforce Enforcement Campaigns
North Dakota’s “Put the Phone Away or Pay” effort increases enforcement throughout the year. In one recent monthlong campaign, 371 distracted driving citations were issued.

Driving deserves your full attention. We know it, but it's easy to be distracted.
In 2024, preliminary data showed 936 distracted driving-related crashes in North Dakota. Because distraction is often difficult to verify at a crash scene, experts believe the actual number of incidents is significantly higher.
