Don't Let Heat Sneak Up on You This Summer
Hot conditions, indoors and out, can quickly become dangerous. Heat stress, exhaustion, and even heat stroke are real risks in many work environments, especially during summer. And when heat-related illness strikes, it impacts more than just health: it disrupts schedules, slows productivity, and endangers your entire crew.
This month, Get Home Safe North Dakota is helping employers recognize and respond to heat risk on the job. Whether it’s sun exposure outdoors or high temps around ovens, equipment, or machinery indoors, the threat is the same, and it’s often underestimated.
|
What employers should know:
- Heat stroke can cause confusion, organ damage, and even death if not treated immediately.
- Indoor heat sources and lack of ventilation are just as hazardous as working in the sun.
- Fatigue, dehydration, and sunburn all lower focus and raise the risk of injury.
What you can do:
- Encourage hydration and provide access to water.
- Adjust workloads and allow time for acclimatization.
- Provide cooling breaks and shaded or ventilated rest areas.
- Educate employees on the symptoms of heat exhaustion and stroke.
- Promote UV protection like sunscreen, hats, and long sleeves for outdoor workers.
Let’s work together to keep North Dakota workers safe this summer and prevent heat-related emergencies before they happen.
