Start by learning about TFFR and your benefit options
Begin your retirement journey by learning about the Teachers' Fund for Retirement (TFFR) pension program and your benefit (annuity) options.
if you only want to revisit a portion of the YouTube video, select "More" to expand the video description, revealing chapters (shortcuts) and the transcript.
Review your MyTFFR account
Log in to MyTFFR and use the My Profile and My Beneficiary tiles to confirm your contact information and beneficiary designations are current. Provide as much detail as possible so RIO staff can reach you and your beneficiaries when needed.
Gather the information needed for your application
Before applying for retirement, collect your proof of age documents, resignation letter, current teaching contracts, and other required items in an electronic format.
For best results, follow the Retirement Application Checklist.

Retirement FAQs
1. How and when should I submit my application?
RIO staff recommend waiting to apply until you are 60–90 days from your planned retirement date. Use the Apply for Retirement tile on your MyTFFR dashboard to complete the application.
2. Which benefit option should I choose?
Use the Estimate My Benefit tile to compare benefit (annuity) options, survivor benefits, federal tax withholding, and your estimated net benefit. Contact RIO if you need assistance with this tool.
3. Where can I learn about health insurance and Medicare?
Start by watching the ND Navigators’ Bridging the Gap presentation. If you retire before age 65, the ND Navigators can also help you find and enroll in an affordable health care plan.
Retired TFFR members may be eligible for health, dental, vision, and/or life insurance through NDPERS.
The Social Security Administration provides information on Medicare eligibility, and NDSHIP helps residents understand Medicare coverage and answers related questions.
