We also reviewed the vegetable subgroup previously categorized as 'legumes'. The USDA recently updated the terminology from 'legumes' to 'beans, peas & lentils' vegetable subgroup.
- The beans, peas & lentils (legumes) subgroup includes vegetables such as kidney beans, navy beans, edamame, lentils, black-eyed peas, split peas, black beans, garbanzo beans, and pinto beans.
- Vegetables such as green peas (frozen, fresh, canned) are considered a 'starchy' vegetable.
- Vegetables such as green beans, wax beans, sugar snap peas and snow peas are considered 'other' vegetables.
For more information on vegetable subgroups, check out the Crediting Vegetables in the Child Nutrition Programs Tip Sheet.
