After feedback received during our 2023 training, we decided to host our Annual Training in June this year. As a reminder, one representative from each sponsor is required to attend both the foodservice and administrative sessions.
NEW format this year! If you thought Jeopardy was fun...wait till you take part in our interactive training sessions this year!

See you soon!
May is here, and wow, did spring and summer come quickly? It will be a beautiful spring and summer, and I look forward to all the fresh produce and flowers grown all over the state. There are many exciting and fun ways to incorporate more Farm to ECE/CACFP activities in your facility. Check out the resources and ideas below.
One of the exciting things that is happening is that I am applying for the ASPHN Farm to CACFP FARMWISE grant. If our state is chosen, North Dakota will have a supported coalition to build more resources, technical assistance, and capacity for our CACFP and Early Care and Education (ECE) sites in North Dakota to participate in Farm to Child Nutrition more easily. In addition, this will provide excellent training resources and materials to share with all of you starting this summer. So, keep your fingers crossed and keep positive thoughts that North Dakota is chosen. If you want to learn more about ASPHN or FARMWISE, check out this link. If you need help or have questions on how to incorporate more Farm to CACFP/ECE programming, please get in touch with me. There are lots of ways to be successful, and in any of these core elements of Farm to CACFP/ECE: local food purchases, gardening, and education, you can find something that is fun and educational for everyone.
I will continue to extend the Harvest of the Month posters to CACFP sites, and they will be available for download for 2024-2025. May is celebrating beef this month, so enjoy that great source of protein this month! HINT: If you print it in grayscale, it’s a great coloring sheet for the kids!
If you need help connecting with local producers, please contact me.

The Institute of Child Nutrition is funded by the USDA to provide resources, training and research to Child Nutrition Program Operators. This is where we direct you to take the Sanitation Training - but they have so much more!
One resource is called 'Mealtime Memo'. It is a monthly article dedicated to CACFP related best practices. You can check out all articles here: Mealtime Memo - Institute of Child Nutrition (theicn.org) or subscribe to getting them via email each month (link below).
USDA released a Final Rule on 4/25/24 to better align the CACFP, SFSP and School Meals meal patterns with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
Main impacts to the CACFP include:
Implementation Date: July 1, 2024
- Allowing nuts and seeds to credit for the full meats/meat alternates components
- Allowing vegetables to be substituted for grains in programs that primarily serve American Indian or Alaska Native Children
Implementation Date: October 1, 2025
- Sugar limits in breakfast cereals and yogurt - transition from Total Sugar to Added Sugar
- Breakfast Cereals: Must contain no more than 6 grams of added sugars per dry ounce.
- Yogurt: Must contain no more than 12 grams of added sugars per 6 ounces.
More information and requirement changes will be addressed during our Annual CACFP Trainings held in June.
