*(with extra $0.15 & $0.40 for SY 22-23)
Students that were eligible for free or reduced meals in SY 19/20, 20/21 or 21/22 can be carried over in their most recent status for 30 school days. You can search for your old Direct Cert lists in STARS and use your rosters from those years. Use the most recent determination per student.
This 3-year flexibility for 30-day carryover does not pertain to the lists of free and reduced names you are submitting for P-EBT cards. The P-EBT cards are only for students that were free or reduced in the 21/22 school year and those that apply for this current 22/23 year by August 19.
Are you looking for a comparison chart on differences between last year and how this year should go?
Visit: School Meals Programs Comparison Table of Flexibilities for School Year 2021-22 and School Year 2022-23 | Food and Nutrition Service (usda.gov) for the full chart.
If you have any questions regarding your program operation this year, please reach out to our office at dpicnfd@nd.gov or your specific CNFD contact.

At our Back To School Workshops (BTSW), we featured our collaboration with the ND Agriculture Department and ND Commodity Groups. Each Site was provided with a poster pack; one poster per month, that can be posted in the cafeteria bulletin board.
Our goal with this project is to offer students education about agriculture as well as including a ND grown product in the month in which we have featured.
|
|
Start talking with your administration/teachers for lesson planning that they can do in the classroom that relates to the harvest and month. The commodity group for each month is listed below and have some resources available. It may be best to contact them at least 6-8 weeks ahead to help prepare if you need more information.
Try to offer a menu item that includes a North Dakota product featuring the month’s harvest.
Right now, start thinking about September (Wheat) & October (Canola)!
Send us pictures of how you feature these products! We would love to see them!

September 26: Johnny Appleseed’s Birthday
-
Can conduct a ‘crunch’ any day from September 26th until the end of October.
-
Must register to be counted. Registration link coming soon!
|
- What to do to celebrate: Register your school, plan to serve something ‘crunchy’, such as a fresh apple, cucumber or carrot (preferably something grown locally) at breakfast, lunch or another time during the school day. You can document this and promote it locally, as you prefer!
- We need schools, businesses or other anyone else in your community to register and participate in order for it to be counted. This is a friendly competition between MPRO States: CO, MO, MT, KS, SD, ND, WY, NE to win bragging rights.
Let’s go for the WIN!!!
NDDPI - CNFD Back To School Workshop Recap
For those that participated in our kickoff to the new school year, we thank you for your time and attention and hope you were able to take away some useful information for your school meal programs.
For those that did not have the opportunity to join us, here are some key points from the session.
Our guest speaker Janelle Peterson, of South Dakota (past State Agency Staff and Food Service Director of Rapid City, SD) talked on “Building a Rockstar Team”, “10 Common Errors CN Programs Make” & “Expanding Student Choice without Breaking the Bank”. She was informative, interesting and impressive.
One of Janelle’s presentation included a student lunch survey; attendees inquired about getting the survey; CLICK HERE for an example of a Student Lunch Survey, something very similar to Janelle's, but takes the ‘positive’ angle. Feel free to use this as a template or make your own to have student engagement in a tangible way!
We had a generous donation from SunButter (a proud ND product!); they donated 2.2 oz cups (which are a 2 oz M/MA serving size) as well as the popular “pop-socket” for your phone.
If you are interested in another variety of SunButter, they have a new ‘Chocolate’ variety, which still has the classic SunButter taste, yet has a sweet taste. Try it with graham crackers & fruit! For more information on their products, check out their website: K-12 Schools | SunButter Foodservice
We also learned on the updated reimbursement rates, USDA Transitional Standards for the coming years and had networking amongst the attendees. We had over 500 registered attendees – we are grateful for the high interest in this event.
Are you a new ND Kitchen Manager? The regulations can be daunting! Please contact one of the Child Nutrition Specialists at dpicnfd@nd.gov for help navigating the requirements of federal school meal programs.
The School Nutrition Association (SNA) held their Annual National Conference (ANC) from July 10-12th, in Orlando. We had a great North Dakota presence! In addition to DPI CNFD, we had School Representatives from: Mandaree, Parshall, Circle of Nations, Fargo, West Fargo, Williston, Wahpeton, New Town, as well as industry folks from: Cavendish, SunButter & Cloverdale.
Presentation topics ranged in all things related to School Nutrition, however hot topics were USDA Updates, Meal Charge Policies, CEP, Employee/Employer connections, Imagination in Menu options & much more.
The exhibit hall featured over 800 vendors with new products, ideas and equipment.
If you are interested in attending ANC in upcoming years and have questions about it; reach out to us! It is a valuable experience to grow professionally and bring back great ideas to expand your current program.

We start this year’s informal monthly information hour on Tuesday, August 16, 2 p.m CST, with a review of Free and Reduced applications. The federal school meal programs are returning to the income eligibilities and meal pricing structures this year, so we want to remind you how to process these applications.
Why would you care if you only ‘work in the kitchen?’
Several reasons come to mind: “Knowledge is power” is a time-tested adage. Knowing how the lunch apps are to be filled out and evaluated, you can advise households when asked (not if, when). You will promote your program, which ultimately leads to increased participation. Increased applications and increased participation helps out the school district in many ways including increased reimbursement, greater commodity entitlement and potential eligibility for more grants, to name just a few.
Please join us this 3rd Tuesday of the month at 2 p.m. CST (1 p.m. MST) on our TEAMS channel either on your desktop or from your phone: ____________________________________________________
