Road and utility improvements are underway along the west end of Memorial Highway from Main Street to Titan Machinery, including new storm sewer system installation, aging water main replacement, roadway reconstruction, new traffic signals and street lighting installation, and bike and pedestrian path upgrades.
With storm sewer work completed on the eastbound side, paving has begun. Crews will place permanent concrete from the Main Street intersection to the west side of Riverwood RV, while temporary asphalt goes down on the temporarily widened lanes between Riverwood RV and Faulkner's Market. The temporary asphalt is needed until storm sewer outfall drainage piping and structures are finished along 3rd Street SE. Once that utility work wraps up, it'll be replaced with permanent concrete, expected early next spring.
Once paving and striping are complete, traffic is expected to shift onto the new eastbound lanes next week, weather permitting. Next, work will move to the westbound side, starting with pavement removal and underground utility improvements near the Main Street intersection.
Lift station construction will soon be underway near Midway Lanes. This work requires dewatering, which pumps groundwater from beneath the surface to keep work zones dry and safe for construction and underground utility installation. Once underway, water may be visible in the area from groundwater dewatering, not a water main leak.
Storm sewer outfall structure work is in full swing, with larger equipment now on site, and is expected to continue through late fall.
Crews are building multiple structures along the new route to carry stormwater from Memorial Highway to the Heart River. These structures can be opened or closed to help manage flooding and stormwater. Once this phase is complete, stormwater collected from the roadway will discharge directly into the river.
Timelines may shift due to weather or other unforeseen delays.
