Construction on the east portion of Memorial Highway in Mandan, from 32nd Avenue SE to 46th Avenue SE, is now complete, with only a few small finishing touches remaining. The project included reconstruction of the roadway, installation of underground utilities and a new stormwater system, upgraded lighting and traffic signals, improved drainage, and the addition of bicycle and pedestrian facilities, creating a safer and more efficient corridor for the community.
Thank you to the public and businesses for your patience and cooperation throughout this project, and to the crews whose hard work will benefit the community for years to come.

Newsletter note: With Phase 1 nearly complete, project email updates will transition to major milestones and significant construction activities on Phase 2. Time-sensitive traffic changes and other important information will continue to be shared by email as needed. The most current project information is available 24/7 at dot.nd.gov/memorialhwy.
Road and utility improvements are underway along the west end of Memorial Highway from Main Street to Titan Machinery, including aging water main and storm sewer replacement, roadway reconstruction, new traffic signals and street lighting installation, and bike and pedestrian path upgrades.
-
Main Street and Memorial Highway/Mandan Avenue intersection: Storm sewer replacement is complete south of the intersection on the eastbound side. Crews will soon begin concrete paving. Once cured, work will shift to the westbound side, starting with storm sewer and water main replacement.
-
Memorial Highway between Riverwood RV and Faulkner’s Market: Storm sewer replacement continues on the eastbound side. Crews will begin asphalt paving upon completion. Once cured, work will shift to the westbound side, starting with water main replacement.
-
3rd Street SE and Riverwood Avenue SE: Large equipment will move into the area starting next week as stormwater drainage outfall structure and storm sewer work ramps up. Work in this area will continue through late fall.
Heads up! In mid-August, work is expected to shift from the eastbound side of Memorial Highway to the westbound side, with head-to-head traffic moving to the eastbound lanes. Until then, current traffic control remains in place:
-
Main Street and Memorial Highway/Mandan Avenue intersection: Eastbound Main Street is down to one lane. Memorial Highway traffic is head-to-head on westbound lanes, with an 11-foot lane restriction. Pedestrian access is closed.
-
Memorial Highway between Riverwood RV and Faulkner's Market: Traffic is down to one lane in each direction, with a center turn lane.
-
3rd Street SE and Riverwood Avenue SE: Expect ongoing lane restrictions, traffic control, and detours in this area through the end of the construction season. Riverwood Avenue SE may temporarily close for storm sewer work.
Timelines may shift due to weather or other unforeseen delays.
-
Mid-August: Traffic impacts along Memorial Highway are expected as work shifts over to the westbound side.
-
Fall: Concrete and temporary asphalt pavement is expected to be in place and traffic control removed along Memorial Highway. Crews expect to shift focus and complete work in the 3rd Street SE/Riverwood Avenue SE area.
-
Through winter: Five lanes are expected to remain open on Memorial Highway, operating as normal until next spring.
