Construction on Phase 1 of the Memorial Highway project continues between 32nd Avenue SE and 46th Avenue SE.
Crews are making progress throughout the corridor as paving, landscaping, restoration and final roadway improvements move closer to completion.
Here’s what’s happening across the project:
- Mainline concrete paving is nearing completion.
- Crews continue construction of the raised median throughout the corridor.
- Work continues at the 40th Avenue intersection, including preparation, grading and curb and gutter installation.
- Construction of the shared use path continues along the south side of the roadway.
- Sidewalk construction continues along the north side of Memorial Highway between 46th Avenue SE and 40th Avenue SE.
- Edge drain installation is nearing completion between Action Drive and the Radco/Schwan area.
- Utility work is largely complete, with final tie-ins, testing and cleanup activities underway.
- Topsoil placement and final seeding continue as areas of the shared use path and sidewalk are completed.
- Fence installation planning and staking continues.
The final step of concrete paving includes construction of the center turn lane and raised median.
To complete this work, traffic will continue shifting to the outside lanes in sections of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 feet. During construction, traffic will not be able to cross the center median within active work zones.
What to expect:
- Businesses within active paving sections will be limited to right-in/right-out access only
- Traffic will remain shifted to the outside lanes during construction
- Center turn lane paving within each section is expected to take approximately one week, weather permitting
Once completed, all five lanes of concrete roadway will be in place through Memorial Highway.
Work is now underway along Memorial Highway between Main Street and Titan Machinery through the 2026 construction season.
Construction continues on the north side of the Main Street and Memorial Highway/Mandan Avenue intersection and the railroad underpass, with the intersection on track to be fully open by June 27 in preparation for the 4th of July holiday.
- Curb & gutter and roadway improvements on the west side of the intersection
- Curb & gutter, sidewalk, and roadway improvements on the east side of the intersection
- New median pavement at Main Street and Mandan Avenue
- Construction of the railroad underpass barrier wall
- Temporary road widening along westbound Memorial Highway between Riverwood RV and Faulkner's Market
- Placement of a temporary asphalt surface along the underpass and northwest corner of the intersection (permanent sidewalk will be completed this fall, when the new traffic signal pole arrives)
- Storm sewer installation near Riverwood Avenue, off 3rd Street and Memorial Highway
- Dewatering at two lift station sites on the project, one near McDonald’s and one near Midway Lanes
Dewatering is the pumping of groundwater from beneath the surface to keep work zones dry and safe for lift station construction and underground utility installation. The water visible near McDonald's and Midway Lanes is from groundwater dewatering, not a water main leak.
- Mid-week next week, traffic is expected to shift to the temporary road widening along westbound Memorial Highway between Riverwood RV and Faulkner's Market.
- At the railroad underpass, eastbound Memorial Highway is reduced to one lane and the pedestrian path is closed. Both are expected to reopen next week.
- Westbound Main Street is reduced to one lane just east of the intersection.
- Northbound Mandan Avenue is closed near the intersection, with traffic head-to-head on the southbound lanes.
