Construction on Phase 1 of the Memorial Highway project continues between 32nd Avenue SE and 46th Avenue SE.
Crews are making progress throughout the corridor as paving, utility installation, landscaping and roadway improvements move closer to completion.
Here’s what’s happening across the project:
- Mainline concrete paving and center turn lane construction continue throughout the corridor.
- Crews continue construction of the raised median throughout the corridor.
- Approach work and roadway preparation continue following recent paving operations.
- Construction of the shared use path continues along the south side of the roadway.
- Sidewalk construction continues along the north side of Memorial Highway between 46th Avenue SE and 40th Avenue SE.
- Edge drain installation is nearing completion between Action Drive and the Radco/Schwan area.
- Utility work is largely complete, with final testing and cleanup ongoing.
- Topsoil placement and restoration work continue throughout the project.
- Goldade Landscaping has begun restoration activities.
- Fence installation coordination is underway.
Traffic is currently using the permanent Action Drive access, with drivers able to make right turns in and right turns out only.
This temporary traffic pattern allowed crews to remove the Action Drive bypass and continue construction of the center turn lane at the same time.
Depending on concrete strength, full access at Action Drive could be restored as early as Sunday or Monday.
The final step of concrete paving includes construction of the center turn lane and raised median.
To complete this work, traffic will continue shifting to the outside lanes in sections of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 feet. During construction, traffic will not be able to cross the center median within active work zones.
What to expect:
- Businesses within active paving sections will be limited to right-in/right-out access only.
- Traffic will remain shifted to the outside lanes during construction.
- Center turn lane paving within each section is expected to take approximately one week, weather permitting.
Once completed, all five lanes of concrete roadway will be in place through Memorial Highway.
Next week, crews will start a new stage of work along Memorial Highway between Main Street and Titan Machinery. This work includes temporary roadway widening, pavement removal, installation of new storm sewer, water main, and sanitary sewer and additional work off the main corridor.
Construction continues on the north side of the Main Street and Memorial Highway/Mandan Avenue intersection and the railroad underpass, with most work expected to be completed by late June.
- Curb and gutter and roadway improvements on the west side of the intersection
- Curb and gutter, sidewalk and roadway concrete placed on the east side of the intersection
- New median pavement at Main Street and Mandan Avenue
- Construction of the railroad underpass barrier wall
- Concrete curing on the east side of the intersection
- Storm sewer installation near Riverwood Avenue, off 3rd Street and Memorial Highway
- Dewatering at two lift station sites on the project, one near McDonald’s and one near Midway Lanes
Next week:
- Placement of a temporary asphalt surface along the underpass and northwest corner of the intersection (permanent sidewalk will be completed this fall, when the new traffic signal pole arrives)
Dewatering is the pumping of groundwater from beneath the surface to keep work zones dry and safe for lift station construction and underground utility installation. The water visible near McDonald's and Midway Lanes is from groundwater dewatering, not a water main leak.
- At the railroad underpass, eastbound Memorial Highway is reduced to one lane and the pedestrian path is closed. Both are expected to reopen next week.
- Westbound Main Street is reduced to one lane just east of the intersection.
- Northbound Mandan Avenue is closed near the intersection, with traffic head-to-head on the southbound lanes.
