Construction on Phase 1 of the Memorial Highway project continues between 32nd Avenue SE and 46th Avenue SE.
Crews continue making progress throughout the corridor as paving, utility installation, and roadway improvements move forward on both east and west ends of the project.
Here’s what’s happening across the project:
- Mainline concrete paving and center turn lane construction continue throughout the corridor.
- Crews have begun curb and gutter work for the raised median near 46th Avenue SE.
- Approach work and roadway preparation continue following recent paving operations.
- Construction of the shared use path continues along the south side of the roadway.
- Sidewalk construction continues along the north side of Memorial Highway. The sidewalk will be built between 46th Avenue SE and 40th Avenue SE.
- Storm sewer, utility and watermain work continue near 40th Avenue SE.
- Drain tile installation is expected to begin soon on the west end of the project.
- Utility testing, sanitary sewer work and service connections are ongoing throughout the corridor.
The 43rd Avenue SE intersection has reopened to traffic following completion of roadway and utility work in the area.
The north side of the Memorial Highway and 40th Avenue SE intersection is scheduled to close on Thursday, June 4, to allow crews to relocate conflicting natural gas and fiber optic lines.
Additional updates will be passed along to businesses closer to the closure date.
The final step of concrete paving includes construction of the center turn lane and raised median.
To complete this work, traffic will continue shifting to the outside lanes in sections of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 feet. During construction, traffic will not be able to cross the center median within active work zones.
What to expect:
- Businesses within active paving sections will be limited to right-in/right-out access only
- Traffic will remain shifted to the outside lanes during construction
- Center turn lane paving within each section is expected to take approximately one week, weather permitting
Once completed, all five lanes of concrete roadway will be in place through Memorial Highway.
Construction continues on the north side of the Main Street and Memorial Highway/Mandan Avenue intersection and the railroad underpass, with work expected to be completed by late June.
- Median paving at the intersection is wrapping up this week, setting the stage for improved traffic flow once the full intersection is complete.
- Next week, traffic will shift to allow crews to focus on sidewalk and concrete roadway improvements just east of the intersection on Main Street.
- The railroad underpass barrier wall reinforcement is complete. In the coming weeks, crews will restore the temporary pedestrian path and remove the lane closure along the underpass.
- Storm sewer installation will soon begin along Riverwood Avenue, off of 3rd Street and Memorial Highway. No traffic impacts are expected from this work.
Current traffic control will remain in place over the weekend. The head-to-head traffic pattern on Mandan Avenue will begin Monday morning.
Current traffic control:
- At the railroad underpass, eastbound Memorial Highway is reduced to one lane and the pedestrian path is closed.
- Mandan Avenue is reduced to one lane in each direction north of the intersection, and westbound Main Street is reduced to one lane just east of the intersection.
- The northbound left turn from Mandan Avenue into Burger King remains closed. Drivers are encouraged to access the Burger King parking lot via 13th Avenue NE off Main Street during this time.
 Next week:
Northbound lanes on Mandan Avenue will be closed as crews work on the east side of the intersection, with traffic running head-to-head on the southbound lanes. The left turn into the Burger King parking lot from northbound Mandan Avenue is expected to remain impacted during this time. All other movements are expected to be maintained.
