Construction on Phase 1 of the Memorial Highway project continues between 32nd Avenue SE and 46th Avenue SE.
Crews continue making progress throughout the corridor as paving, utility installation, and roadway improvements move forward on both east and west ends of the project.
Here’s what’s happening across the project:
- Mainline concrete paving continues on both the east and west ends of the project.
- Approach work and roadway preparation continue following recent paving operations.
- Construction of the shared use path continues along the south side of the roadway.
- Sidewalk construction continues along the north side of Memorial Highway. The sidewalk will be built between 46th Avenue SE and 40th Avenue SE.
- Storm sewer and watermain installation continues near 40th Avenue SE.
Utility testing, sanitary sewer work and service connections are ongoing throughout the corridor.
The 46th Avenue SE intersection reopened to traffic this week following completion of the southbound turn lane extension and concrete repair work.
The 43rd Avenue SE intersection closure is now in place. Crews began watermain connections and will be pouring back concrete late this week and early next week.
What to expect:
- No access to Memorial Highway from 43rd Avenue SE during the closure
- Traffic detours and posted signage throughout the area
- Continued access to nearby businesses during construction
This closure is expected to remain in place for up to two weeks.
Action Drive is expected to reopen Friday ahead of Memorial Day weekend!
All utility work has been completed in the area and concrete paving through the intersection has been finished.
In the coming weeks, traffic will be detoured back to the temporary route one final time while crews complete center turn lane paving work.
The final step of concrete paving includes construction of the center turn lane and raised median.
To complete this work, traffic has been shifted to the outside lanes in sections of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 feet. During construction, traffic will not be able to cross the center median within active work zones.
What to expect:
- Businesses within active paving sections will be limited to right-in/right-out access only
- Traffic will remain shifted to the outside lanes during construction
- Center turn lane paving within each section is expected to take approximately one week
Once completed, all five lanes of concrete roadway will be in place through the corridor.
Construction continues on the north side of the Main Street and Memorial Highway/Mandan Avenue intersection and the railroad underpass, with work expected to be completed by late June.
- Median work is expected to wrap next week, setting the stage for improved traffic flow once the full intersection is complete.
- Traffic is expected to shift next week for crews to work on new sidewalk and concrete roadway just east of the intersection on Main Street.
- Crews continue reinforcing the railroad underpass barrier wall to strengthen the structure and ensure public safety.
Current traffic control will remain in place through the Memorial Day holiday weekend. No changes to the traffic pattern are expected until late next week.
- At the railroad underpass, eastbound Memorial Highway is reduced to one lane and the pedestrian path is closed.
- Mandan Avenue is reduced to one lane in each direction north of the intersection, and westbound Main Street is reduced to one lane just east of the intersection.
- The northbound left turn from Mandan Avenue into Burger King is closed. Drivers are encouraged to access the Burger King parking lot via 13th Avenue NE off Main Street during this time.
 Next week:
Remaining construction work on the east side of the intersection will require the northbound Mandan Avenue lanes to be closed. During this time, traffic will run head-to-head on the southbound Mandan Avenue lanes at the intersection.
For now, expect the left turn into the Burger King parking lot from northbound Mandan Avenue to remain impacted as crews finalize traffic control setup next week. All other movements are expected to be maintained.
