After several years of construction, the I-94 Interchange at Exit 161 is entering its final season. This year, crews will complete the remaining southeast ramp, roadway elements, and the last details that will bring this project to an official close early this fall.
When complete, the redesigned interchange will eliminate two left-turn movements, replacing them with right-turn loops built for smoother, safer travel through one of Bismarck's busiest corridors.
Crews have been focused on the southeast eastbound I-94 entrance ramp, removal of unneeded interim signal poles and spans, installation of permanent signage, and raised median construction.
This month, the focus shifts to paving the southeast ramp. With four rounds of concrete pours planned, each requiring several days to cure, the paving process will carry through most of May.
In the months ahead, crews will complete the northwest ramp sidewalk and pedestrian crossing, remove temporary connections and signals, install permanent signage and pavement markings, and finish street lighting, landscaping, and final cleanup.
Traffic is currently running head-to-head on the southeast loop ramp while the permanent I-94 East entrance ramp is under construction.
Starting after the Memorial Day holiday, northbound and southbound drivers on Centennial Road/Bismarck Expressway will shift to the new southeast slip ramp to enter I-94 East, allowing crews to complete construction of the full ramp.
Watch for updated signage and follow all traffic control directions as crews make this switch.
A temporary signal is currently operating for northbound traffic at the southeast ramp, and the temporary markings you see now are routinely checked and refreshed to stay visible throughout construction.
Permanent signals and pavement markings will be in place once paving and median work is complete, giving drivers clear, lasting guidance through the new interchange.
