Nancy Ness abstract paintings on exhibit on the 18th floor of the North Dakota State Capitol
BISMARCK, ND - North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA) is exhibiting a unique collection of non-objective, mixed media artworks by Fargo artist Nancy Ness (pictured above) on the 18th, or observatory, floor of the ND State Capitol through August 2025. The exhibit includes approximately twenty one pieces, including acrylic paintings and mixed media artworks, most of which are named after important people in Ness' life.
Ness’s work is deeply personal and emotionally resonant, often serving as a tribute to the people in her life. Nearly all of her abstract pieces are titled after family members and friends, sometimes before she begins painting and other times upon completion, when the artwork evokes a specific person. Ness consistently draws inspiration from the diverse landscapes and seasonal variations found throughout North Dakota, as well as the picturesque colors she encounters during her travels. For Ness, art is both a visual exploration of color and texture and a therapeutic, soul-satisfying process. “Painting provides me with a therapeutic experience; it is when I feel most at peace,” she says.
Working primarily in acrylics but also incorporating inks, oils, and metallic powders or foils, Ness enjoys the flexibility and surprise of mixed media. Her preference for large-scale canvases stems from both their visual impact and her desire to fully immerse herself in the act of creation. She sees art not only as a personal outlet but also as a way to inspire others to pursue their passions and embrace the emotional journey that comes with creative expression.
The exhibit is open for viewing during ND State Capitol Complex regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm; with additional summer hours on Saturdays, approximately 12pm to 3pm.
All visitors should use the public entrance, on the south side of the Capitol. After passing through security, take a right and walk down the hall to find the elevator.

In addition, a curated selection of ten framed works from the state’s permanent collection is on display in the Governor's Staff offices on the ground floor of the Capitol. The works span a range of media, including colored pencil, oil, acrylic, graphite, charcoal, digital print on canvas, etching with chine-collé, screenprint, and ink on gesso panel. Though modest in number, the variety of techniques and visual styles offers a dynamic glimpse into the rich artistic fabric of our state.
Members of the public are welcome. Please stop into the Governor's Office on the first floor to request a viewing.
