Linda Donlin artworks celebrating southwest North Dakota on exhibit at the Capitol
On exhibit on 18th floor of the Capitol through April 2025
BISMARCK, ND - ND Council on the Arts is exhibiting a diverse collection of artworks celebrating southwestern North Dakota by Linda Donlin (pictured above) on the 18th, or observatory, floor of the ND State Capitol through April 2025. This captivating exhibit features a body of work that reflects her passion for the beauty of nature, rural America, the badlands, and the performing arts. Explore original illustrations from a book she wrote called The Magic of Medora, which celebrates the history and charm of Medora. Her granddaughter Ava inspired the book with her curiosity about Medora, and her nine grandchildren, who appear in some illustrations, were involved in the research and publication process.
In addition, the exhibit includes textured artworks created with various acrylics, oils, and unique paints. Influenced by the impressionists, Donlin primarily uses a palette knife to create layers and achieve the effect she seeks. Together, these pieces offer a rich, visual narrative of the region’s landscapes, culture, and enduring allure.
The exhibit is open for viewing during ND State Capitol Complex regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, excluding holidays.
Biography: Linda’s background is in public relations and communications. She left the corporate world to pursue her passion for art when she signed with The Capital Gallery as a represented artist in 2019. Donlin works in acrylics and oils in a technique that dances at the intersection between painting and sculpting. Her Facebook followers helped her create a word for her technique – paintsculpting! Whether she is building texture boldly to create the boughs of an evergreen tree or gently touching with a brush to add just the right finishing detail of an eyelash on a child or star in the sky, Donlin paints in a style that must be seen in person to be truly appreciated. Her gallery pieces and commissions have since been sold to collectors nationwide.
In addition, a collection of stained glass artworks by Bismarck artist Dawn Kopp is on display in the Governor's Staff offices on the ground floor of the Capitol. Kopp described her mosaic style as "painting with glass." She explained, "I use high quality stained glass and a variety of other media including oil pastels, found treasures, magazine paper, and other print materials such as charcoal and wax crayons to create my mixed media mosaics and mosaic collages. My fascination with color theory strongly influences my work and can be witnessed in all of the pieces shown in this exhibit."
Members of the public are welcome. Please stop into the Governor's Office on the first floor to request a viewing.
