Main Street Initiative representatives from the Governor's Office, including Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller, and Commerce joined local officials, business owners and citizens for a tour of Lisbon on Wednesday, June 15.
Following the tour, the team held an open town hall meeting with local youth, community leaders and state and federal agencies to discuss available resources and share strengths and challenges.The Main Street Initiative is structured around four pillars designed to help communities, including:

Multi-state placemaking best practices exchange workshop takes place in Minot
The Department of Commerce invites communities to participate in a free multi-state placemaking best practices exchange workshop on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 2 pm and Thursday, Aug. 3 from 7:30 am to 5 pm CT at the Minot State University Student Center.
Placemaking is a collaborative process among public, private and community partners to strategically improve the social, cultural and economic structure of a community. Placemaking plays a key role in creating healthy, prosperous communities where people want to live, work, play and learn. This workshop aims to showcase effective placemaking approaches, introduce attendees to resources and tools, and connect with experts from other states.
2023 Main Street ND Summit to be held in Watford City Oct. 24-25

ED&F director presents at EDND's Spark ED event
Several Commerce team members attended Economic Development Association of North Dakota’s Spark ED event this week Monday through Wednesday. Commerce was pleased to sponsor the event, and Economic Development and Finance Director Rich Garman presented Wednesday on the principles of project management. Throughout the event, many local development organizations shared tips, software, and tools they use locally for project management and reiterated the need for tools that help manage the ongoing workload of local development organizations.
Unlike years past, EDND shifted their summer conference programming to focus on the training and educational components at the foundation of economic development. The content was carefully designed to engage members brand new to the field as well as those who have served in the economic development field for decades.

North Dakota Tourism engages with travel influencers at Midwest Travel Network Conference
At the 2023 Midwest Travel Network Conference held in Kansas City, Kansas, Commerce Communications Manager Kim Schmidt and Social Media Strategist Alicia Jolliffe engaged with over 130 travel influencers, writers and destination professionals from across the Midwest region. Schmidt took the stage to present legendary story ideas and highlight experiences and communities throughout North Dakota. Communities were also represented by Bismarck-Mandan Marketing & Communications Director Camie Lies and Visit Greater Grand Forks Communications Coordinator Shelley Wagendorf. The 2024 conference will be in Shipshewana, Indiana, June 13-15.

2023 North Dakota Governor’s Photo Contest for Travel and Tourism kicks off
Gov. Doug Burgum and the North Dakota Department of Commerce Tourism and Marketing Division, in partnership with AAA of North Dakota and North Dakota Council on the Arts, announced the North Dakota Governor’s Photo Contest for Travel and Tourism today, open now through January 31, 2024.
This year’s competition highlights the unique characteristics of the four seasons, with photo entry categories Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. In addition to prize money, winning photographs may be used in ND Tourism newsletters, promotional materials and social channels as well as AAA publications and social media channels, and will be displayed on the 18th floor of the ND State Capitol mid-April through May 2024.

North Dakota Department of Commerce Workforce Director Katie Ralston Howe presented at the Hunt Institute North Dakota Legislators Retreat in Medora this week. In attendance were Lt. Governor Tammy Miller, legislators from both chambers and parties, educators, and state officials who work with education and workforce. The Retreat discussed a number of topics important to North Dakota’s workforce challenges and brought in both state and national experts to discuss best solutions for North Dakota’s growing education and workforce needs. Topics covered included: supporting equity for birth – age five, student behavioral health and well-being, recruiting and retaining rural teachers, and preparing students for the workforce.

Commerce mission held in France
Commerce Deputy Commissioner/COO Shawn Kessel and North Dakota Trade Office Executive Director Drew Combs promoted North Dakota’s emerging business opportunities at VivaTech and also addressed “Doing Business in the US” with Morgan Bertin from Thales to an audience assembled at the US Ambassador’s residence in Paris.
