Wilson athletic fields spring back to life
Spring has sprung in Wilson, one of our favorite times of the year! The daffodils start popping up in February, followed by the redbuds and cherry trees bloom. The weather could be chilly or steamy or rainy or blustery, sometimes all in the same day. Heating bills are heading down, but you might face a line to wash the pollen off your car.
But most fun, the call of "play ball" is ringing out at Wilson ballfields. We have hosted soccer tournaments in recent weekends, the Wilson City Little League held Opening Day ceremonies last Friday, and the annual Easter Egg Dash was Tuesday at Greater Wilson Rotary Park. The annual Wilson County Special Olympics were this morning at Hunt High School, and the pickleball complex will hold its grand opening Friday at 6 p.m. and host a tournament this weekend with more than 150 players.
We are already signing kids up for summer camps, and we are mere weeks away from the farmers market opening and the Gig in the Park concert series. There's more to do in Wilson than ever, and this is your invitation to get involved. This newsletter is full of information on how to take the next step so please do!

Pickleball Facility Grand Opening set for April 11
 |
|
The city's newest athletic facility will officially open on Friday, April 11 at 6 p.m. The grand opening of the Pickleball Facility at Gillette Athletic Complex will be followed by a weekend tournament, the first one at the new facility. Everyone is welcome - rain or shine - to celebrate Wilson's newest world-class recreation site. |
City closes Friday, April 18 for Easter holiday
The city of Wilson will be closed Friday, April 18, for the Easter holiday. Good Friday is not a federal holiday, but it is a state and local holiday. Older state residents may recall that North Carolina observed Easter Monday instead from 1935-1987.
The biggest impact on city services will be on Thursday and Friday's garbage and recycling routes, each collected a day early next week. Also there will be no special pickups on Wednesday, April 16.
All city emergency services and utilities will be staffed. If you have a longer weekend, enjoy it and be safe; we'll all be back to work Monday, April 21.

Spring Clean Up Week set for April 21 - 26
Wilson residents will have the opportunity to dispose of bulky waste and participate in special recycling events during the city's annual Spring Clean-Up Week, taking place April 21-26. This initiative helps keep Wilson's neighborhoods clean while providing residents with responsible disposal options.
During the week, residents may place bulky waste items behind the curb for collection. Items should be positioned away from trees, parked vehicles, mailboxes, and other obstructions. Construction debris and car frames are not accepted.
Special Clean-up Events - Saturday, April 26
In addition to curbside collection, the city of Wilson will host three special disposal and recycling events on Saturday, April 26:
-
Free Paper Shredding - Residents may bring up to 50 pounds of documents for secure shredding at 1501 Ward Blvd (Roses Entry) from 8 am to noon. This event is for residents only; commercial businesses are not eligible at this time.
-
Electronics Recycling - Residents can drop off unused or broken (but intact) electronic devices for proper disposal. This drop off will take place near the paper shredding at 1501 Ward Blvd (Roses Entry) from 8 a.m. to noon.
-
Mulch Giveaway - Free mulch will be available for residents at Toisnot Park (1500 Corbett Ave) from 8 a.m. to noon while supplies last. Bring a shovel and take away as much as you can haul off.
Fair Housing Month workshop & resources
April marks Fair Housing Month, a time to reaffirm the city of Wilson's commitment to ensuring fair and equitable housing for all residents. This year also commemorates the 57th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, a landmark law protecting individuals from housing discrimination.
To support fair housing awareness and education, the City of Wilson's Human Relations Division is hosting a Fair Housing Workshop on Monday, April 29, at 6 p.m. at Gig East Exchange at 127 Goldsboro St. S. This free workshop will provide valuable information about fair housing rights, responsibilities, and local resources available to residents.
