Wilson This Week -- Dec. 20, 2024 |

Holidays close city offices Dec. 24-26, Jan. 1
Wilson city offices will be closed four days over the next two weeks, Dec. 24-26 for Christmas and Jan. 1, 2025, for New Year's Day. Here's how it affects services:
Environmental services: Next week Monday and Tuesday garbage and recycling routes will both be served Monday, Dec. 23. Thursday and Friday routes will both be run Friday, Dec. 27. There will be no special pickups this week.
All daily routes will be on schedule the next week, but there will be no special pickups on Wednesday, Jan. 1.
Obviously this is a time when people have extra items and we are working short weeks. So please we request your patience. Remember that you can enter your special pickups in Fix-It Wilson and perhaps get a quicker response.
Customer service: While the customer service office on Nash Street will be closed those four days, you can still pay bills online at WilsonNC.org; use the automated system at 252-399-2200; or pay at the kiosk in the drive-thru lane. Payments through the kiosk apply to City of Wilson utility and Greenlight customer accounts instantly.
Wilson RIDE will operate 7 a.m.-6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day. The service will run on New Year's Eve, but hours and the driver pool might be limited. Use the Via app to schedule rides. Wilson RIDE will not operate on Jan. 1, 2025, New Year's Day.
All emergency services will operate on normal schedules. Utilities will be staffed and ready to respond to outages or other situations; call 252-399-2424.

Wilson’s inaugural Christmas Cheer Challenge is on! After we closed entries Monday evening, we had more than 50 homes and businesses entered, and we have the next few days to get out and enjoy the merriest of the merry!
We announced this as a contest and we do plan to announce winners on Monday, but it’s never really been about the competition. We have been celebrating Christmas displays around Wilson for more than a decade. This year we wanted to do something to make this a shared experience.

A City of Wilson mapper (Jeff Webb, if Santa wants to give more brownie points) made a map of all the nominees. It’s easy for families to plan routes to see the decorations, but you can also learn something about each display and see photos.
For example, there’s a gingerbread-themed house on Thornwall Court, and the homeowners have depicted themselves as a cookie couple, enjoying a hot soak in a cup of cocoa!
See the house on Dewfield Drive that the homeowner described as “Clark Griswold meets Wilson, NC!“ But there’s a home on Riverbirch Road that is “a beaut, Clark!“ Which is closest to the Christmas Vacation classic?
Santa‘s gone fishing on Grimsley Store Road! Bring canned and non-perishable food as a home on Lakeside Drive is collecting for Hope Station this season.
Whether your taste is for simple and stylish or garish and glowing, reverent or irreverent, Wilson has got something for you and your family.
We were touched to read this comment on our Facebook page, “My son and I did this last Saturday. We rode around drinking hot chocolate and looked at the beautiful lights. We created some great memories. Thank you for putting this together.”
Try it yourself at the link below. Open the Challenge page on your smart phone to create a route in Google Maps.
Last weekend for Train of Lights!
For several years, families have been making Christmas memories on the Train of Lights at Wilson Recreation Park, 500 Sunset Road W. If you haven't been this year, we are down to the final weekend!
The train runs 5:30 p.m.-9 p.m. tonight through Sunday, weather permitting. There's a small chance of rain tonight, but the weekend nights are both supposed to be clear and cold so bundle up and come on. Bring $2 cash per rider, a little more if you want hot chocolate or cookies, and the kids are definitely going to want that. This event raises funds to support Special Olympics of Wilson County.
