A Wilson native who retired from the U.S. Army will be the guest speaker at this year’s Veterans Day service.
The Wilson Committee on Patriotism has invited Filicia Brown, who retired as a master sergeant in the Army, to give the keynote address at the annual ceremony, which will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in the Wilson County Courthouse plaza, corner of Nash and Goldsboro streets, weather permitting.
As we send this, there's a good chance of rain Monday. If the event is moved, the rain location is Wilson City Hall, 112 Goldsboro St. N, City Council chambers, third floor, enter via the alleyway.
“Whether we have a beautiful November day or not, we will have a wonderful event to honor the men and women who protected our freedoms," said Ray Chambers, committee chairman. “We certainly hope people will join us.”
If the event is indoors, we will broadcast it on Wilson's Channel 8 and stream it online. Check our Facebook event Sunday evening or Monday morning for updates.
The ceremony will also feature a musical performance from the Higher Calling Baptist Church Youth Choir, led by Music Director Dominique Jones. Cherry Danzy of St Pauls Church of Christ will perform the National Anthem. The tentative program also includes flag ceremonies involving the Junior ROTCs of Beddingfield, Hunt and Fike high schools; a welcome by Wilson Mayor Carlton Stevens; and a POW/MIA service; prayers by James A. Faison, the committee’s chaplain; and ending with a playing of Taps and a 21-gun salute. Some activities may have to be curtailed if the service is moved inside.
The Committee will also provide a hot dog lunch after the ceremony.
