Prepare now for Tropical Storm Debby
We are keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Debby, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Wilson later this week. While the forecast may change and we don’t yet know exactly how Wilson will be affected, now is the time to prepare for the storm.
We will post information for Wilson residents and Wilson Energy customers on our Storm Update page on the city's website. For now, it has information about how to monitor power outages and other helpful information. We will include more Wilson-specific tips as the forecast becomes more certain. If the storm impacts us, we will share street closures and power outage information on this page, as well as our social media channels.

National Night Out canceled
Tropical Storm Debby has forced us to cancel this year's National Night Out. The storm is expected to impact Wilson on Tuesday evening, as well as the rain date. We're so sorry to cancel the event and look forward to planning National Night Out 2025!

Here's what you need to do
Wilson County Emergency Management has a saving, "The First 72 are on you." In any emergency, you need to have enough supplies on hand for yourself, your family, and your pets for 72 hours, or 3 days. In any disaster, first responders have to be able to respond safely. High winds force emergency vehicles to stay put. As soon as it is safe, we will assess damage and respond to help as many people as possible as quickly as possible.
But it could be days before assistance arrives. So be ready to be self sufficient for 3 days with food, water (a gallon a day per person), medications and other emergency needs. You don't want to be the person with 4 cases of canned goods and no can opener.

Have a plan for communication and to meet
People never expect to be out of contact these days, but a hurricane can easily knock out cell service or cause power outages that prevent phone chargers from working. If family members are forced to evacuate quickly, they need to have ways to reconnect and places to gather. If a parent has a medical emergency, a child may not know their medications, their doctors' names or their insurance numbers. An emergency communication plan can ease minds in uncertain moments. Ready.gov offers a form you can fill out to have a pdf emailed to all family members (see link below).

Don't forget your pets!
Many of us have animals that are just like family. You need to include them in your planning. You need to stock food, water and medications for the animals in your life. If you are forced to evacuate, many shelters will not take pets so it is good to have a friend or family member who'd agree to keep them. Be sure to have recent pictures of your pets if they were to go missing in the wake of a disater and it's a good idea to have them microchipped. Put your pets' medical records including vaccinations in your emergency kits.
