Happy Independence Day!
The City of Wilson will be closed this Thursday for the Independence Day holiday. All offices and recreation centers will be closed, but our emergency services and utility offices will be staffed and ready. Wilson RIDE will be operating; use the Via app to schedule rides.
The biggest service changes will be for environmental services. Thursday's trash and recycling routes will be served Wednesday. Also, there won't be any special pickups Wednesday. We will be back open Friday and those routes will be on schedule.

Don't let fireworks ruin your holiday
The Wilson Police Department encourages you to celebrate the holiday safely. If you plan to use fireworks in your festivities, remember these safety tips:
- Only use legal fireworks. In North Carolina, that's fountains, smoke devices, snappers, glowworms, sparklers, poppers, snakes, and novelty items that do not explode, fly, spin, or leave the ground.
- Under no circumstances should fireworks be pointed at or thrown at another person.
- Use fireworks in a clear area, away from people, homes, power lines, and any flammable objects.
- For safety measures, have a bucket of water readily available to extinguish malfunctioning fireworks or in case of a fire.
- Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
- Fireworks should not be lit indoors. They should not be lit inside a container.
- Do not hold fireworks in your hands.
- It is strictly prohibited to use fireworks while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The Wilson Police Department also asks that residents please refrain from celebratory gunfire. Firing bullets into the air is illegal and dangerous as what goes up eventually will come down. To report gunfire or suspicious activity, contact the non-emergency number at 252-237-8300 option 1. In cases of emergency, contact 911.
Enjoy fireworks safely as a spectator
