Downtown Sports and Entertainment Facility Bonds Soon Available to Investors

The City of Wilson received financing approval last week by the Local Government Commission, clearing the way to build a downtown stadium for minor league baseball.

At its Feb. 6 meeting, the N.C. Local Government Commission signed off on the financing proposal for the complex to be built off Goldsboro Street, just south of the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park. The stadium is at the heart of a $280 million redevelopment plan that will provide a new home to the Carolina Mudcats Single-A baseball team prior to the 2026 season.

The LGC approval clears the way for the city to sell $63.5 million in low cost, tax-exempt bonds. That sale is set for next week, and the bonds are expected to be bought quickly by mainly institutional investors.

There actually is a chance for local residents to buy portions of the bonds. The minimum investment is $5,000. The interest rates for the bonds will be set Feb. 22.

If somebody does want to invest in the project, they might feel like a part owner of the stadium. Imagine the pride you'd feel on Opening Day 2026 and looking on as Wilson's minor league team takes the field and being able to say, "I helped build this!"

The Wilson City Council will hold its February meeting this Thursday, starting at 7 p.m., at Wilson City Hall, 112 Goldsboro St. N.

Spring sports signups underway for kids, adults

Wilson Parks and Recreation is now registering kids and adults for a variety of spring sports. You can get more information or enroll at wilsonnc.org or at either the Sunset or Reid Street centers.

Wilson City Little League is enrolling kids for 4 age groups: 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9-12. Register by March 1, and play begins April 5. Cost is $35 for city residents, $52 for non-residents. Contact Troy Blaser, tblaser@wilsonnc.org, 252-399-2267.

Youth soccer registration is under way for several sections of soccer, beginning at age 3 and going through 15. Practices and skills assessments for older kids will begin in late February or March. Eight startup companies join RIoT's Wilson accelerator program

RIoT recently announced the launch of the 17th cohort of the RIoT Accelerator Program (RAP XVII), welcoming eight startups to the twelve-week program.

Selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants, the startups in this cohort represent a diverse range of industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, wellness, data privacy, and smart cities. Each team brings a unique perspective and a passion for leveraging Data and IoT technologies to solve real-world challenges.

Workshops for these startups will be hosted at the Gig East Exchange in Wilson, allowing them to leverage the Exchange’s resources while bringing their innovative solutions to the region.

“This 5th Wilson-based cohort of the RIoT Accelerator is a testament to the past success and our ongoing commitment to entrepreneurship and economic development in eastern North Carolina,” said Will Aycock, Greenlight's General Manager. “We are confident that these innovative startups will not only benefit from this program but also contribute significantly to advancement of entrepreneurship and the economic well-being of eastern North Carolina and beyond.”
