The Wilson Rose Garden will hold its first ever fall event with food trucks and artists showcasing their talents among the blooms.
Art in the Garden will be Sunday, Oct. 8, from 1-5 p.m. at the garden, located at the City of Wilson’s Charles Pittman Operations Center, 1800 Herring Ave. This will be a free event and open to the public.
It could be cancelled if the weather doesn’t cooperate; keep watch on the city’s social media channels for updates.
“We believe the garden is beautiful most of the year but particularly in the spring and during the fall flush,” said Becky Rose, chair of the garden’s board of directors. “We have had Sunday in the Rose Garden in May for more than 20 years and have thought about wanting to have a fall event too.”
Ellen Bergland and Lisa Shreve, two deadheading volunteers and board members, spearheaded planning for the event. They have arranged two food trucks, Bill’s Grill and Creamology ice cream, to sell food during the event.
The organizers have also arranged for eight tents. Seven artists are going to be ready to show and sell their craft items from pottery to stained glass to prints to jewelry. Additionally, another tent will feature items from six members of Wilson Active Artists.
“We just want people to come see the art, enjoy the food, but also enjoy the garden at full bloom,” Mrs. Rose said.
The Wilson Rose Garden is one of North Carolina’s largest rose gardens. It was created in 1992 by a residents campaign primarily led by rose enthusiast Rufus Swain. Today the garden has around 60 beds with more than 1,000 bushes and an army of volunteers maintains it. The garden is free to visit and generally in bloom from April until November. It is available for rental for weddings or other special events; call 399-7530 for more information.
