WFRS has city's hottest new rides at Stations 1, 5
 |
|
The hottest rides in Wilson are parked at two fire stations. Wilson Fire/Rescue Services recently received two new engines, greatly increasing the department’s response and capabilities.
The brand new Engine 1 went into service last Thursday at the WFRS headquarters on Hines Street and saw its first fire on Friday.
Engine 5 came on board about a month ago at Station 5 on Airport Boulevard. It has responded to many small fires and accidents. It also was a star attraction at the recent Safer Conference in Raleigh where thousands of N.C. firefighters checked out the ladder truck.
|
The Wilson City Council agreed in September 2021 to buy the vehicles for around $1 million apiece. Their arrival allowed WFRS to rotate engines built in 2000 and 2008 into reserve. That allows the city to retire and sell engines from 1993 and 1997.
These new arrivals were completely designed for the jobs they will do, according to WFRS Deputy Chiefs Michael Sumner, Doug Bissette and Jim Campbell.
Engine 1 is a pumper, shorter than Tower 1 also at HQ, and more maneuverable in downtown streets. It has special hose hookups if firefighters need to take water down alleyways or other places the truck can’t reach.
Engine 5 has a 107-foot ladder, which would help with both fighting fires and doing rescues in the apartments that are being built along Raleigh Road.
Both engines have expansive firefighting and rescue equipment, easily accessible in a hurry.
The design process started with discussion with the fire captains and firefighters who’d use the engines every day, the deputy chiefs said. WFRS personnel worked closely with Pierce, the supplier, including visiting the plant in Appleton, Wisc., during brisk days where the temperature was in the single digits. The engines go under a “fine tooth” final inspection, Sumner said.
“We were very excited to get these in service,” Campbell said.
WFRS personnel have enjoyed getting used to the new vehicles, which handle a little differently than other engines, due to their new suspensions and wheel base.
WFRS will have six engines in service (one per station, plus Tower 1 at HQ), two engines and one ladder truck in reserve.

With such a hot summer on our hands 🥵, we’re all tempted to crank up that AC, but there’s a more energy efficient, cost-effective solution: Use a fan!
Whether it’s a ceiling fan or pedestal fan, fans are tremendously more energy efficient than turning down the air conditioner, using around 1% of the electricity. Hunter Fans says the direction of the ceiling fans should be counterclockwise in the summer, creating a downdraft or breeze, while you should rest the fans to spin clockwise in winter, to recirculate warm air and give your heater a break.
Think before you touch that thermostat!
