Summer camps bring together police, young people
 |
|
More than 130 Wilson young people are learning or practicing football and cheerleading skills at Toisnot Middle School this week, part of the 2023 Wilson Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) Camp.
Chief Scott Biddle said they were thrilled with the turnout, which is the largest since at least 2019. The young people are having a good time despite not great weather so far.
Police officers volunteer their time with PAL camps, spending time connecting with young people as coaches, mentors and friends. PAL has activities year-round, but the summer camps are some of the biggest events on the calendar.

Teens can register now for Youth Citizens Academy
Summer vacation has been, what, two weeks now and already your teens are complaining there's nothing to do? We have a solution next month!
Registration is now open for the 2023 Youth Citizens Academy, which will be Monday-Wednesday, July 24-26. 9 a.m.-2 p.m. each day. The City of Wilson Human Relations Office hosts this free academy and even provides lunch every day.
Begun in 2013, the academy is open to rising 9th – 12th graders attending school in Wilson County. It is a chance for the teens to get insight into the structure and operations of local government. Students will have the opportunity to visit and interact with many city departments through hands-on activities and tours of various city facilities.
It gives students a behind-the-scenes look at great job opportunities in their home community, plus a chance to talk to people doing that work. The City employs more than 700 people making it one of the largest employers in Wilson County.
Applications are available at the Human Relations office located at 104 Goldsboro Street. You can also click the link below and print an application and return it to the Human Relations office by July 19. For more information, contact the Human Relations office at 252-399-2308.

City closes for Independence Day holiday
City offices will be closed Tuesday, July 4, for the Independence Day holiday. Here’s how the closure affects city services:
Environmental Services: The only routes affected will be households served Tuesday. Their garbage and recycling pickups will be Wednesday, July 5. There will be no special junk pickups this week for appliances, bulky items, etc.
Customer Service: It's always a hassle when the customer service office on Nash Street is closed in the first week of the month. Other options to pay bills are:
- Doing so online at WilsonNC.org;
- Using the automated system at 399-2200; or
- A kios khas been added in the first drive-thru lane to provide a contactless payment option that takes cash, check and card payments 24 hours a day. Payments through the kiosk apply to City of Wilson utility and Greenlight customer accounts instantly.
Wilson RIDE: The city’s transit system will operate on July 4, although its driver pool might be reduced. Use the Via app or call 595-5357 to schedule rides.
All emergency services will operate on normal schedules. Utilities will be staffed and ready to respond to outages or other situations; call 399-2424.
