Saluting the employees who keep our city running
The City of Wilson will be celebrating our employees during National Public Works Week, May 21-May 27, but the fun really begins Thursday evening.
City Council will recognize Public Works Director Bill Bass and his staff with a proclamation during the May 18 meeting.
Public works includes professionals who plan, build, operate and maintain programs such as engineering, water, sewer, streets, stormwater, signage and signals, solid waste collection, transit and equipment services. In short, they keep the city operating and life smoother for all of our 50,000 residents and others who work here.
We will be sharing content on the city's social media accounts about our public works employees. If you know any -- maybe relatives, friends or neighbors -- please feel free to express your gratitude to them for the work they do year-round.

City Council begins budget discussion this Thursday
The Wilson City Council will get its first look at the proposed 2023-24 budget during its meeting this Thursday night. The budget will set the city's spending priorities for the year beginning July 1, 2023.
Council traditionally does not discuss the budget in depth during the presentation by City Manager Grant Goings and the city's financial staff. Instead, they typically ask questions or make comments during a budget work session, which will be Thursday, June 1, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the city's operations center.
The entire proposed budget will be available online for review after Thursday night. Council will hold a public hearing at its meeting on Thursday, June 15. All local governments in North Carolina are required to pass their annual budgets by June 30.
The public is welcome to watch the budget presentation live at City Hall, 112 Goldsboro St. E; on Channel 8 on local cable; or streaming online. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Embers headline Thursday Gig in the Park
The Embers featuring Craig Woolard will bring beach music and popular oldies to the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park this Thursday night. The free concert will be 6-9 p.m.
The Embers have played Wilson many times and always attract huge crowds. The weather is supposed to be spectacular Thursday (clear and cooling by the evening) so come early and stay late! Bring blankets, lawn chairs and a good thirst and hunger as there will be several food trucks and beverage stations.
We are halfway through the Gig in the Park series. Coming up are the Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute Band on Thursday, June 1, and Shoot to Thrill, an AC/DC tribute band, on Thursday, June 15.
