Join us for Memorial Day ceremony on Monday!
A military retiree and teacher at Beddingfield High School has been invited to give this year’s Memorial Day talk.
The Wilson Committee on Patriotism asked Walter Singletary to give the main address at the service, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, in front of the Wilson County Courthouse.
In case of rain, the event will be moved to the City Council chambers, Wilson City Hall, 112 Goldsboro St. E. Either way, the public will be welcome to attend.
Singletary retired from the U.S. Army after serving 27 years. He has been on the staff at Beddingfield since March 2010 where he serves as the sergeant major for the JROTC.
“We are excited to have someone with as much military experience as Sgt. Maj. Singletary share his thoughts on Memorial Day,” said Committee Chairman Ray Chambers.
The Memorial Day service will also include music from Lee Woodard Elementary School, under direction of music teacher Jana Winders; a National Anthem performance by Beddingfield High School JROTC cadets Sa’Niya Coppedge and Dontae Hunter; flag ceremonies involving the Junior ROTCs of Beddingfield, Hunt and Fike high schools; a welcome by Wilson Mayor Carlton Stevens; a POW/MIA service; placing of a wreath in honor of the county’s war dead; and prayers by James A. Faison, the committee’s chaplain.
The event concludes with a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.”
Afterward, the audience is invited to enjoy a free hotdog lunch. Tickets will be given out at the event.
If the ceremony is held on the courthouse plaza, it will be recorded and broadcast on the city’s Channel 8 on Greenlight and other cable systems. It will also be streamed live online and available to be replayed later; go to WilsonNC.org for links.
If it is held in council chambers, it will be broadcast live on the city’s channel and online. Go to the city’s Facebook or website for links that day.

Wilson Fire/Rescue Services Renews Class 1 Rating
Wilson Fire/Rescue Services has earned the highest insurance class rating achievable, making the department one of the safest in North Carolina. Chief Albert Alston, Deputy Chief Michael Sumner, and Deputy Chief Jim Campbell were recognized by the Wilson City Council for the achievement during the May 18 meeting.
WF/RS recently completed a routine inspection conducted by the Department of Insurance Office of the Fire Marshal. The inspection evaluates staffing levels, equipment, maintenance of equipment, communication capabilities, and availability of a water source. Upon completion of the inspection, a rating of 1 was given to WF/RS, the highest level available.
“This rating verifies for others what we already knew, the men and women of Wilson Fire/Rescue Services are among the best in their field,” said City Manager Grant Goings. “Congratulations to Chief Alston and his team.”
The North Carolina Response Rating System ranges from 1 to 10, with 1 indicating the safest departments. Only 13 of the 1,532 fire departments in North Carolina have earned a Class 1 rating.
“Renewing our rating is a tremendous accomplishment for our department,” said WF/RS Chief Albert Alston. “We have a consistent focus on training, maintaining and preserving our equipment, and having a highly-skilled team. At times like this the hard work pays off, and we’re grateful to be able to benefit Wilson’s citizens and businesses.”
An important component of the inspection is availability of a water source for all areas within the service territory.
The rating will continue for a five-year period. The department first achieved a Class 1 rating in 2018. Prior to that the rating was a Class 2.
The most noticeable impact for Wilson residents and businesses involves insurance rates, which are lowest for Class 1 rated areas.
