Baseball's back, strawberries are sweet on the vine, it's spring and we all want that fresh beginning. Well, Earth Day is this Saturday, April 22, and it's a great day to start a healthier diet, to work to have a tidier and more beautiful home, and to do many other activities to celebrate our community.
Wilson Farmers & Artisan Market
This Saturday is the first day of the Wilson Farmers & Artisan Market at the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park! Every Saturday until Sept. 16, the market will be open from 8 a.m.-noon and offering a variety of local produce that's in season. This weekend you might find strawberries and tomato plants for your garden, fresh seafood from the coast, locally produced meats and eggs, food trucks, and a few things you didn't even know you needed!
Facebook is a good way to keep track of what's for sale each week: Wilson Farmers Artisan Market Facebook page.
Shred-a-thon & Electronics Recycling Event
We are once again doing a paper shredding event for Wilson residents to help you fight identity theft. This Saturday individuals and families are welcome to bring bags and boxes of personal papers and have them shredded. Please, no businesses.
This is a great way to make sure your tax records, medical records or anything else with personal information does not fall into the hands of ne'er-do-wells. The IRS only recommends holding onto old tax returns for three years so if you did taxes this week, you can get rid of everything pre-2020.
Saturday is also a day you can get rid of old electronic devices, whether they work or not, as long as they can be safely handled (no broken glass or missing panels). They won't be accepting phones, but usually those can be dropped off at your carrier.
Both the shredding and recycling location will be in the Roses parking lot, 1501 Ward Blvd., from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. this Saturday, April 22. More info is available on the Shred-a-thon event page.
Mulch Giveaway
Bring your truck or at least large containers this Saturday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., to Toisnot Park, 1500 Corbett Ave NE, for free mulch. This is mulch made by our Environmental Services department from compost and it can be used to beautify your gardens and yards and fight weed growth. More info is available on the Mulch Giveaway event page
Spring Clean Up Week
This weekend is also your final chance to clean out your attic, garages and other areas before the City of Wilson's Spring Clean Up week.
Beginning Monday, April 24, city crews will collect: - Furniture and bulky items (chair, table, sofa, etc.), which are loadable by two people - Appliances and other “white goods” (stove, water heater, washer, dryer, etc.) - Tires - Other junk - Yard waste including pine straw, leaves, clippings & limbs
Car frames and construction debris will not be collected.
Please separate items for Spring Clean-Up Week from normal garbage and recyclable containers. Place items behind the curb, three feet from trees, mailboxes and utility poles, and out of storm drains, gutters and sidewalks.
NCDOT Spring Litter Sweep
The 2023 Spring Litter Sweep is taking place April 15-29. Traditionally scheduled for the last two weeks of April and September, Litter Sweep is the N.C. Department of Transportation’s biannual statewide roadside litter removal initiative. Residents throughout the state participate in local efforts to help clean up North Carolina's roadways.
In addition to volunteers, NCDOT maintenance crews devote one week of their time to pick up litter and collect orange bags placed on the roadsides by volunteer pickups.
Volunteers are provided cleanup supplies, such as reversible orange/blue trash bags, gloves and orange safety vests, from their local NCDOT County Maintenance Yard office.
Our local coordinator is Sybil Stancil, 252-462-2550, if a group is interested in volunteering. For supplies please call 252-640-6460
Interested in helping keep litter at bay on our city streets? With 230 miles of City maintained streets, we need help keeping these streets in our community clean. The City will provide the group with all the materials needed for a clean-up as well as pick up and dispose of all the collected trash from the clean-up once the group notifies us that it is completed.
Pictured here is the Beta Beta Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. on one of their clean-up days. These folks arrange clean-up days five times a year. We're so grateful to them and all of the dedicated groups volunteering their time and energy to keep Wilson beautiful.
For more information about Adopt a Street or to request supplies for a one-time clean up, contact Jose Valdovinos or call 252-399-2435.
