 Register to attend the Fall Comprehensive Arts Education Conference, Saturday, September 26th at PECK Expeditionary Learning School, in Greensboro, NC!
This day-long conference serves as a statewide professional development opportunity for dance, music, theatre, and visual arts educators, district arts education leaders, teaching artists, arts integration specialists, and pre-service teachers from across North Carolina working in K-12 programs, independent studios, performing arts organizations, and higher education institutions.
The mission of this conference is to support the three essential components of the North Carolina Comprehensive Arts Education Model: Arts Education, Arts Integration, and Arts Exposure. Sessions will be centered on the four K-12 Arts Education Standards core strands of Connect, Create, Present, and Respond and aid to reinforce the 2024 standard course of study.
This event is proudly supported by the North Carolina Music Educators Association. All conference participants will receive a boxed lunch and a NC CAEC T-shirt with registration. Stay tuned for future posts about this event on Facebook and Instagram!

 This three-part webinar series will support schools in preparing for the launch of Honors-level Arts Education courses at the Novice, Developing, Beginning, and Intermediate levels in 2027–28. Participants will explore state expectations for Honors coursework to begin developing locally aligned honors tasks, assessments, and instructional approaches that reflect authentic arts rigor. These sessions are for High School Arts Educators, District Arts Education Leaders, and Honors Implementation Coordinators.

Dr. Rhoda Bernard, Managing Director of the Berklee Institute for Accessible Arts Education at the Berklee College of Music, will present Making Music Education More Accessible, a free online webinar for music educators on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 10:00–11:30 AM. For more than 80 years, the North Carolina Symphony has collaborated with statewide music educators to deliver our curriculum-aligned music education program into the classroom. Today, the program engages more than 150,000 elementary school students across North Carolina and beyond. Each year, we recognize three educators that are helping us reach and inspire the future musicians and audiences that are in their classrooms.
The NC American Indian Heritage Commission (AIHC) is excited to soon launch its K-12 project, “Native North Carolina: Exploring the Past, Present & Future of North Carolina Tribal Communities, which will include classroom resources for teaching about North Carolina’s diverse and rich tribal life. Materials will be grounded in current events and recent history, empowering students to learn about NC's distinct indigenous populations in ways that situate tribal life in the present.
The initiative will also provide engaging professional development, which recently launched with “Teaching on Native Land: Exploring the Living Histories of Indigenous North Carolina.” The video features educators from across North Carolina who joined the AIHC at Morrow Mountain State Park and Town Creek Indian Mound NC Historic Site for a day highlighting that Indigenous history in NC is living, connected, and essential in today’s classrooms.

New Tour Themes Added for our Student Visits!
Consider bringing your students to the NCMA for one of our brand-new docent-led tour themes!

Art of the African Diaspora: This tour highlights the vitality and evolving nature of art by African and African-descended artists from all over the world. While being culturally specific, the collection of works explored touch on a variety of themes and concepts relevant to social studies, technology, the environment, religion, and spirituality.

Art Museum for Everyone: This tour is designed to create confident and independent museumgoers from a young age. It covers a variety of artworks from all over the collection and includes hands-on opportunities to explore technological and analog resources that are available in the galleries and online while on the tour. Students even get the opportunity to select their own objects to explore during the tour and learn how to approach independent research in a museum. This tour theme is especially recommended for first-time museum visitors.

Virtual Field Trips
Virtual Field Trips with NCMA give students the opportunity to engage with objects in the Museum’s permanent collection, from the classroom! During these FREE, 30 or 45-minute interactive experiences with a museum facilitator, students actively engage in discussion and develop visual literacy skills. You choose from our standards-based, cross-content area menu of programs. Spanish Language and Extended Curriculum programs are available. Check out the growing number of programs that come with a Post-Virtual Field Trip Art Kit, free for North Carolina Teachers. Want to order "off the menu?" Museum staff can customize a program that connects museum object to your content.

All About Virtual Field Trips

Calling all High School Teachers!
Sign up for Artists in Process
Artists in Process is a biennial program designed for teachers to support high school students’ exploration of the artistic process. The program includes guided access to NCMA resources, online forums for discussion, and a museum visit. Students will learn about artists from the NCMA collection and consider how these artists develop, document, and refine their ideas into a body of work. Teachers will be provided support to help facilitate students’ discovery of their own line of inquiry, experimentation, risk-taking, and exploration of their ideas instead of following a prescribed path. A new theme will be explored each year. Students will have the option to submit works created through the program to the museum’s high school art exhibition.

 What does it actually mean to jam? Learn strategies for facilitating jam sessions for students that are attainable, concrete, confidence-building, and (most of all) FUN! The Music Will Academy "Jamming" module offers practical, classroom-tested methods for introducing structured improvisation and small-group playing across popular genres like rock, pop, and hip-hop. By bringing in real-time, collaborative music-making and prioritizing ear-based, experiential learning, this self-paced course helps teachers build an environment where students gain confidence, rhythmic independence, and creative freedom.
This course is filled with ready-to-use tools—including actionable frameworks, flexible song charts, and facilitation strategies—that teachers can add into their music instruction right away. Jamming is a great way to boost student engagement, facilitate peer-to-peer collaboration, and bring music that students experience into the music classroom. Kodály of North Carolina (KONC) is excited to welcome two new members to our board: Anna Ball, Secretary, and Ashley Hood, Treasurer. Both Anna and Ashley have already brought fresh ideas and energy to our chapter, and we are thrilled to have them serving alongside us for the next two years.
Professional learning and connection remain at the heart of our chapter. We are excited about our fall workshop with the amazing Victoria Boler, a KONC member, and an inspiring voice in the broader music education community. The workshop will be held at Wingate University on September 12th, 1:00 – 4:00 pm. A virtual option is also available. Victoria’s workshop, Refreshing Your Repertoire, will challenge us to look at the resources we already have with fresh eyes. Rather than constantly searching for something new, she will encourage us to dig deeper into our existing repertoire and use it to its fullest potential. REGISTER HERE! Looking ahead, KONC is focused on growing our community and expanding access to Kodály-inspired professional learning throughout North Carolina. We hope to engage more college students and build stronger connections with general music teachers across the state. By welcoming educators who may be new to Kodály, or a seasoned veteran of the philosophy we hope to create more opportunities for collaboration, professional growth, and joyful music-making.

Strengthen Your Co-teaching, Expand Your Impact
Applications are open for the 2026–27 Multilingual Learner Teacher Network (MLTN)!
The NCDPI ML/Title III Team invites current content teachers who are co-teaching with ML teachers to apply for this statewide community of practice. Individual educators are also welcome and may be matched with another participant.
Approximately 10 selected pairs will:

Strengthen co-teaching practices using evidence-based guidance.

Collaborate with educators from across North Carolina.

Develop classroom-ready resources to share statewide.
-
Grow as teacher leaders supporting multilingual learners.
Commitment: November 2026–June 2027, including three MLTN meetings, the Summer Conference, and approximately one hour per week for collaboration, reading, and resource development.
Selected participants will receive sponsorship for approved costs associated with required in-person convenings.
First meeting: One day during the week of November 16–20, 2026
