K-12 Social Studies
 Social Studies Standards Review Survey
As part of the North Carolina Social Studies Standards Review and Revision process, the K–12 Social Studies team in the Office of Teaching and Learning continues to seek the input of educators and stakeholders across the state for meaningful feedback on the current social studies standards and objectives.
- In May, the K-12 Social Studies team released the surveys to the PSUs, the social studies community, institutions of higher learning, and all stakeholders interested in providing feedback on the current standards.
- The purpose of this survey is to obtain input from educators and stakeholders familiar with the Social Studies Standard Course of Study in order to inform revision decisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the current standards and objectives.
- If you have not already done so, the Social Studies team in the Office of Teaching and Learning requests your thoughtful input and comments on the current academic standards and objectives for Social Studies to inform the review and revision process. The survey is estimated to take approximately 10–20 minutes to complete, depending on the grade level selected for review, and should be completed in one sitting.
- Any individual who wishes to provide input on the Social Studies Standard Course of Study (SCOS) is encouraged to complete either the Stakeholder or the General Public survey before August 1.
Thank you for your time and input. Your feedback is extremely valuable to the Social Studies standards revision process. In addition to this survey, there will be several opportunities for you to provide feedback on the standards and objectives throughout the revision process. To stay updated on these opportunities, please be sure that you are subscribed to the NCDPI Social Studies listserv.
K-12 Social Studies NCSCOS Data Review Focus Group Meeting
Attention Social Studies District and Charter Leaders:
We have begun hosting focus group sessions across the State Board of Education regions to gather input and feedback on the current North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Social Studies. The purpose of these sessions is to ensure input from all eight regions as we collect qualitative data on the current standards to help inform future revisions.
The K-12 Social Studies team would like to thank the district representatives who have already participated in our regional focus group sessions. We greatly appreciate your time, thoughtful feedback, and willingness to support this important work.
Each session is designed to provide space for practicing social studies educators and leaders to share insight into the strengths, gaps, and opportunities for enhancement within the current standards. Participants include classroom teachers, instructional coaches, professional development coordinators, curriculum directors, and other leaders with experience implementing the North Carolina Social Studies Standards.
Important Note for District and Charter Leaders:
We recognize that staffing and leadership assignments may have recently changed in some PSUs, and we want to ensure that the correct individuals are included in this important process.
If you are no longer the appropriate contact for Social Studies within your PSU, if your role has changed, or if there is an additional or more appropriate district or charter representative who should receive this information, please email Phylisha.Sanders@dpi.nc.gov with the individual’s:
- Name
- Role/title
- PSU name
- SBE Region/District
- Email address and
- Any additional relevant contact information
Thank you again to those who have already participated. We are grateful for the engagement and feedback received so far and look forward to hearing from additional district and charter representatives in the remaining sessions.
