 K-12 Mathematics Standards
Release of Draft 2 of the Proposed 2026 K-12 Math Standards
The NCDPI K-12 Math team has released the second draft of proposed revisions to the K-12 Math Standard Course of Study. North Carolina State Board of Education policy specifies that the NC Department of Public Instruction will formally collect feedback on the proposed draft standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, national organizations, and other education agencies. The purpose of this survey is to obtain input from stakeholders on Draft 2 of the proposed 2026 K-12 Math Standard Course of Study to inform additional revisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the current standards and standards proposed in Draft 2.
The K-12 Math team requests your thoughtful input and comments on Draft 2 of the proposed K-12 Math standards. Your insights are a key part of informing and guiding the revision process. To help you review the Draft 2 standards and provide feedback, the K-12 Math team is sharing several resources to provide additional background information. These include:
-
Draft 2 Video and Draft 2 Video Script -The video gives a high-level overview of the standards drafting process, highlights some key points of interest with Draft 2, as well as some of the resources below.
-
Summary of K-12 Draft 2 Notes - This document provides greater detail on some of the recommended edits/revisions to Draft 2 based on previous feedback.
-
2026 K-12 Math Standards FAQ
-
K-12 Progressions - This folder contains the vertical progressions for K-5, 6-8, Math 1 and 2, as well as the new progressions document, which outlines the vertical alignment for the proposed new high school courses. The folder also has a spreadsheet with all of the draft 2 standards by grade/course.
- AP Precalculus resources - We have provided revised versions of these resources based on edits to Draft 2
- Recommended Placement of NC Math 3 and NC Math 4 standards based on Draft 2 revisions
Participants have the choice of providing either specific standard-by-standard feedback for any or all grades and courses OR choosing a more abbreviated 10-question survey giving feedback on the Draft 2 K-12 standards as a whole.
All survey responses must be submitted by 5:00pm EST on Monday, May 18th, 2026.
You can use this link to access the All-Stakeholder Survey for Draft 2 of the 2026 K-12 Math Standards

 Accessibility Updates
On April 20, the U.S. Department of Justice extended the compliance deadline for the ADA Title II web and mobile application accessibility rule. NCDPI's new deadline is April 26, 2027, giving approximately one additional year to meet the requirements.
The extension does not change the work to ensure we meet obligations under the ADA to make documents, websites, and materials accessible. In the short term, the Math Resource Hub will remain available, as will all of the documents currently posted. Over the next year, the team will continue working to address and remediate previously published documents, presentations, and videos.
To appropriately address ADA requirements, the format and structure of some documents may need to be altered. The K-12 Math team has already addressed the accessibility of the following resources:
- K-12 Standard Course of Study (English and Spanish)
- Glossary
- Math Options Charts
These resources have been posted on the K-12 Math Landing page, which can be accessed by clicking on the following link: K-12 Math Standards and Supports
Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to enhance our website’s accessibility for all users.
Section Chief for Science, Math, and STEM - Dr. Charles Aiken, charles.aiken@dpi.nc.gov

NC State CiMS Cybersecurity Teacher PD
A professional development opportunity for Elementary Math and Science 4th and 5th grade teachers this summer at NC State.
Join the CiMS Cybersecurity Teacher PD at NC State!
We’re excited to invite a second cohort of 60 elementary teachers from across North Carolina to participate in the CiMS Cybersecurity Teacher Professional Development at NC State. This hybrid PD opportunity is designed to empower K-5 educators to bring cybersecurity concepts—like digital security, privacy, cyberbullying, and digital footprints—into their classrooms.
Please see information about research study and flyer below for more information about the Teacher professional development and research study.
Information about Research Study
As part of the teacher professional development, we are conducting a research study on integrating cybersecurity in Math and Science elementary courses. We are seeking teacher participants for both an experimental and a control group. If you consent, you will be randomly assigned to one of these two groups. Below are the research activities of each group.
Experimental Group - Participants in the experimental group will take part in an online professional development on cybersecurity, a two day in-person design thinking institute integrating cybersecurity in Math and Science (July 27 and 28), complete a pre-assessment and a pre-survey, implement an integrated lesson, participate in a post-assessment and a post-survey, and participate in one focus group and one interview. Participants will also administer one pre and post assessment and one pre and post survey with their students and facilitate data collection. Participants receive $2000 as compensation for their participation in all of these research activities.
Control Group – Participants in the control group will complete a pre and post assessment, a pre and post survey, one focus group, and one interview. Participants will also administer one pre and post assessment and one pre and post survey with their students and facilitate data collection. Participants will then be provided an opportunity to participate in the online professional development on cybersecurity. Participants will receive $1250 as compensation for your participation in all of these research activities.
This research is minimal risk. Your participation in this research study is voluntary and strictly confidential. The findings from this project will help us examine the effectiveness of cybersecurity integration in Math and Science.
If you want to participate in this research study, please complete the interest survey and we will follow up with additional information about the PD including the consent form.
If you have any questions or concerns about this request or the survey, feel free to contact Dr. Florence Martin at fmartin3@ncsu.edu . Please refer to study number 28573 when contacting anyone about this study.
We would appreciate it if you choose to participate.

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) announced a Request for Information (RFI), inviting suggestions and innovations to inform a comprehensive review of its Excellence Awards in Science and Engineering (EASE). NSF remains committed to advancing high-quality K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) teaching and mentoring, including through EASE.
Administered by NSF on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, EASE recognizes outstanding contributions in STEM mentoring and teaching through the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program and the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) program.
PAEMST is the nation's highest honor for K-12 STEM teachers, recognizing educators who demonstrate deep knowledge and understanding of the subjects they teach, and their ability to inspire, motivate and enable student success. PAESMEM is the nation’s highest honor for STEM mentors, recognizing the critical role mentors play in the academic and professional development of the future STEM workforce.
In July 2025, NSF announced a pause of both programs to conduct a comprehensive assessment. As part of the review, NSF is issuing an RFI seeking input from both the STEM education and STEM education research communities on exemplary practices, lessons learned from the programs, criteria for selecting award recipients, and other relevant considerations.
Responses to the RFI are due by May 28, 2026.
