SUBMIT YOUR SESSION PROPOSAL FOR THE
COMPREHENSIVE ARTS EDUCATION CONFERENCE
September 26, 2026
PECK Expeditionary Learning School, Greensboro, NC
Proposal Deadline: Sunday, May 3, 2026, 11:59pm
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction invites proposals for sessions at the NCDPI Comprehensive Arts Education Conference.
This day-long conference serves as a statewide professional development opportunity for arts educators, district arts education leaders, teaching artists, arts integration specialists, and pre-service teachers from across North Carolina working in K-12 programs, independent studios, performing arts organizations, and higher education institutions.
The mission of this conference is to support the three essential components of the North Carolina Comprehensive Arts Education Model: Arts Education, Arts Integration, and Arts Exposure. Sessions should address any of the four core strands. Possible explorations could include:
CONNECT: Relate artforms to ideas, school subjects, societies, and cultures of the past, present, and future.
-
Arts Education: How can relating to experiences beyond the classroom strengthen students’ ability to create art?
-
Arts Integration: How can engaging with different artistic styles and traditions contribute to students' understanding of cultural diversity and interconnectedness?
-
Arts Exposure: What are the essential skills necessary for a successful career in the arts?
CREATE: Conceive and develop new artistic ideas and work individually or collaboratively.
-
Arts Education: How can exploring various artistic mediums, instruments, tools, approaches, styles, genres, and techniques foster students' creativity and self-expression?
-
Arts Integration: How can interdisciplinary connections between the arts and other subject areas enrich students' learning experiences and deepen their understanding of complex concepts?
-
Arts Exposure: What legal protections should artists be aware of when creating, presenting, and protecting their work?
PRESENT: Present, perform, produce, and develop artistic ideas and works.
-
Arts Education: How does the process of collaborating, preparing, receiving feedback, and presenting artistic projects or performances cultivate students' confidence, communication skills, and stage presence?
-
Arts Integration: How can technology and digital tools be effectively integrated into arts education to enhance students' creative expression and presentation skills?
-
Arts Exposure: How must artists modify their art for performances/presentations in various spaces and how do venues impact how audiences interact with the art?
RESPOND: Analyze and evaluate how the arts communicate.
-
Arts Education: How do students' interpretations and responses to artistic works reflect their critical thinking skills, cultural backgrounds, and personal experiences?
-
Arts Integration: How do students employ linguistic literacy skills with their artistic literacy skills when viewing and responding to art?
-
Arts Exposure: What strategies help foster a lifelong appreciation for the arts and empower students to engage with the arts as both creators and audience members beyond the classroom?
We invite proposals that cultivate a vision of Arts Education that is inclusive, collaborative, and expansive. Sessions should:
- Develop leadership of Arts educators in the classroom, over school programs, and in the greater NC community.
- Reflect diversity and be inclusive of representation that may include various cultures, abilities, economic backgrounds, and genders.
- Provide opportunities for all students to create, perform, respond, and connect through artistic processes.
- Enhance teaching with research-driven, reflective and dynamic new practices and proven strategies.
We hope you will join us to explore these questions and more through an enriching day of dialogue and professional development.

North Carolina's Vision for Comprehensive Arts Education
In today's globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina's 21st century education.
