2026 ELA Standard Course of Study Initial Statewide Implementation Session Registration Open
Registration Closes May 15, 2026
Statewide, in-person professional development sessions will be offered during Summer 2026 to introduce the new 2026 English Language Arts Standard Course of Study, scheduled for implementation in the 2027-28 school year. Registration for these regional sessions opened on March 6 and is being coordinated at the PSU level, with each district submitting a single registration for a team of up to four participants.
Teacher leaders who are interested in attending--those who are likely to lead professional learning, facilitate implementation efforts, and assist with developing/adapting aligned resources within their districts or schools--should contact their school or district leadership to express interest and inquire about local selection processes. Sessions will be held across all 8 State Board of Education Regions and will provide an overview of the standards, supporting resources, and guidance for local implementation planning.

2026 ELA SCOS Installation Resource Spotlight
2026 ELA Standard Course of Study Glossary
The glossary for the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) for English Language Arts, K–12 (2026) provides definitions of key terms used throughout the standards and objectives in both a tabbed/interactive digital format, as well as a printer-friendly format. While these terms also appear within the forthcoming grade-level unpacking documents, this resource is also offered as a standalone reference to support quick access across grade-levels.
The glossary supports a shared understanding of the ELA standards by helping educators interpret their intent, clarify key terminology, and implement expectations consistently across grade levels and instructional contexts. Because student learning develops across grades, some terms may reflect developmental nuances, and their application may vary slightly by grade-level.
Note: The 2026 ELA SCOS will be implemented in all North Carolina schools beginning in the 2027-28 school year.

Participate in a Study on Science of Reading Training (LETRS) and Multilingual Learners
What?
We are examining teacher practices in reading and multilingual learners, and aim to learn how certified teachers, prepared in the 160-hour LETRS training in North Carolina, are implementing that training with MLs (Multilingual Learners and MLs with IEPs (Individualized Education Plans)).
Who?
Certified teachers who have fully completed the 160-hour LETRS training between 2023-2026 and who work with MLs. You must be over 18 years of age to participate.
What am I being asked to do?
Part 1 is an online survey that will take about 10 minutes to complete. You will be asked to leave your name on a confidential Google form if you wish to participate in Part 2.
Part 2 of the study consists of an interview, one observation, and a second interview regarding your views and practices in instructing reading with MLs and/or with MLs with IEPs. Each interview will be about 1 hour long, and the observation will occur in your reading or literacy block (about one hour).
What will I receive for participating?
You will not receive compensation for completion of the survey, which is Part 1 of our study. However, upon completion of the survey, you will be provided with a link to a confidential Google form where you can leave your contact information. If you participate in Part 2 of this study, you will receive an Amazon gift card for $200. The interviews will be audio-recorded. This information will be stored separately from the survey.
Information you provide will be completely anonymous and no direct link to you or your survey will be made. You can choose not to participate in the study or stop participating at any time by indicating your desire not to continue to the research team.
Questions?
If you have any questions about the research or how it is implemented, please contact the Principal Investigator, Dr. Maria Coady at mcoady@ncsu.edu or (919) 515-1777. Please reference study number 29012 when contacting anyone about this project.
