The Crosswalk illustrates the variance between the 2017 NC ELA Standard Course of Study and the adopted 2026 NC ELA Standard Course of Study. This resource can be used to assist with adapting and/or revising local curriculum.

Additional Installation Resources Available
Throughout the installation phase, supporting resources will be developed and shared. Stakeholders are encouraged to check the 2026 ELA SCOS page in the ELA Virtual Implementation Kit (VIK) often for updates and additional resources. Current resources available in the VIK include
- K-12 and grade-band specific 2026 ELA Standard Course of Study documents,
- the 2026 ELA Standard Course of Study Glossary,
- a Communications Toolkit,
- the 2017 & 2026 ELA Standard Course of Study Crosswalk,
- a Frequently Asked Questions document,
- the NAEP & ACT Mapping document, and
- the Standards Installation Timeline.
In an effort to keep stakeholders informed, the NCDPI ELA Team will provide monthly standards updates that contain the latest announcements and current news regarding the Adopted 2026 ELA SCOS. These updates are sent the first Friday of every month. Consider encouraging colleagues to subscribe to our listserv. Previous First Friday messages can be accessed on the Standard Course of Study & Supporting Resources webpage.
ELA Standards Update Webinar Series

The nomination process for the 2025-26 ELD Recognition Award is now open! If you would like to nominate an ESL/ML teacher of excellence, please contact the ML leadership team and let them know. The nominee will submit a portfolio highlighting their initiatives and contributions.

Hold the Phone: Exploring the Intersections of Screen Time, Brain Health, and Learning
Visiting Scholars Speaker Series & Community Networking Conference
Speakers on six panels will engage in meaningful dialogue on topics related to screen time, brain health, and learning across various fields including but not limited to neuroscience, education, literacy, technology, aging, neurology, physical health, mental health, pediatrics, psychology, communication, and philosophy.

On-going Teacher Professional Learning
The Wake Forest Center for Literacy Education sponsors professional learning for K-12 educators. Using a lifelong learning approach through short enrichment courses, these non-credit bearing classes focus on meaningful professional learning around topics in literacy education designed specifically for K-12 teachers and administrators.

Please note: There is a non-refundable $20 registration fee for all participants, though every K-12 public school educator, university pre-service teacher, and Wake Forest alumnus who attends an entire professional learning course will receive a $20 gift card to reimburse their registration fee.

NCRA Annual Reading Conference
March 15-17, 2026
The North Carolina Reading Association Annual Reading Conference is a multi-day professional learning event designed to advance literacy instruction, leadership, and advocacy across North Carolina and beyond. It brings together educators, literacy leaders, researchers, policymakers, authors, and partners to strengthen reading and writing instruction across grade levels and learning contexts.

The 55th Annual Reading Conference will take place next week from March 15-17, 2026 in Winston-Salem, NC. The conference will provide
- Up to 20 hours of professional development.
- Research-based literacy sessions.
- Networking with passionate educators.
