Social Emotional Learning Alliance for the United States | SEL4US
Since 2007, Alliance for a Healthier Generation's annual recognition program has honored schools for the key role they play in advancing the health and well-being of students, staff, and families.
The 2026 Award Guide is here to help school teams with step-by-step support for understanding the award criteria, preparing evidence, and writing strong responses that fully illustrate their implementation of whole child health best practices.
NEW FOR THIS YEAR:
-
Writing Prompts for Strong Responses: Based on examples from successful applications, these prompts add clarity and depth to help schools provide complete information and reduce the need for follow-up clarification when details are unintentionally left out.
-
Expanded Types of Evidence: Revised language includes photos and documents to gives schools more flexibility and avoid the burden to create materials that are not part of their regular practice.
-
Suggested Use of AI Tools: Keep these guidelines in mind to balance efficiency, accuracy, and the on-the-ground implementation details application reviewers require.
The 2026 America’s Healthiest Schools application window runs from January 13 to April 14.

📸 Share your experiences on social media using the hashtag #KindnessMattersNC! Teachers and leaders are encouraged to spread positivity by showing how kindness has impacted the school or encouraging students to create their own kindness videos—just like Steve Hartman! Educators can submit evidence of school initiatives or student work to NCDPI. Your submissions may be featured on our NCDPI social media, newsletters, and website. Also, be sure to share your experiences on your social media using the hashtag #CharacterMattersNC!
