GLE Student Spotlight
Valentina earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish from McDowell County Schools in the Northwest Region. She satisfied the GLE requirements via course completion for English by taking English IV and course completion for World Languages by taking a Spanish IV community college equivalent, SPA 212. Valentina believes that being bilingual is an important part of who she is and gives her an advantage in what she plans to do after high school. Meeting GLE Requirements through External Exams
Per SBE Policy GRAD-007, students can meet the English and World Language requirements for the Global Language Endorsement (GLE), North Carolina’s Seal of Biliteracy, in one of three ways:
This infographic visually captures the requirements of the Global Language Endorsement (GLE), North Carolina’s Seal of Biliteracy. The policy requirements for English and World Languages can also be accessed on the GLE section of the Global Education Recognitions page at https://go.ncdpi.gov/NCSoBLGLE. Questions about the Global Language Endorsement, NC's Seal of Biliteracy, can be emailed to the GLE Team using the NCDPI Global Education Steering Committee email at ncglobaleducation@dpi.nc.gov.
Course Completion: English & World Languages
Students may meet GLE requirements for both English and World Languages via course completion, choosing course options that best fit their postsecondary plans:
English
Students complete English IV, or an equivalent course, earning a cumulative, unweighted grade point average of at least 2.5 for all English coursework required for graduation. Qualifying course codes for AP, IB, Cambridge, community college courses, and university courses are included in Infinite Campus automation. For students taking community college courses, the English IV equivalencies have been crosswalked to community college ENG 241 or ENG 242 if ENG 111 and ENG 112 have also been completed. See page 12 of the Dual Credit Allowances for Career & College Promise chart to view community college course equivalencies for English IV.
Please note: Students are not required to enroll in honors, AP, IB, Cambridge, community or university courses to satisfy the English or World Language course completion requirements of the GLE.
World Language
Students complete a Level IV or higher course, earning a cumulative, unweighted grade point average of at least 2.5 for all World Language coursework in that language to demonstrate that they have reached the required proficiency level of Intermediate Mid. Qualifying course codes for AP, IB, Cambridge, community college courses, and university courses are included in Infinite Campus automation. For students taking community college courses, the Level IV equivalencies have been crosswalked to community college Level 212 or Intermediate II courses. See the details for each language in the Alignment of World Language High School Courses with Community College Courses chart created from the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) in the Crosswalks area of the World Languages Resources Hub.
In addition to selecting courses based on postsecondary plans, students and families are encouraged to discuss course selection options with school counselors to best match courses taken with desired course rigor and intentional pursuit of the Global Language Endorsement, North Carolina's Seal of Biliteracy.
GLE Helpful Hints
-
Transcript automation: Students who earn the GLE have information for both languages automatically added to their transcript.
-
GPA calculation: Students must earn a cumulative, unweighted grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 in their language courses, English coursework required for graduation and all World Language coursework. Please note that the overall GPA is a factor for some of the other High School Diploma Endorsements.
-
Proficiency earned: If a student meets the World Language requirement with course completion at Intermediate Mid, that proficiency level appears on the transcript, though higher levels of proficiency can be documented so that they appear on the transcript.
-
Dual benefit with CDM: External exams for World Languages can also be used in Phase 1 of CDM. A student may earn credit and qualify for a higher level World Language course placement, as well as satisfy the GLE requirement, if their score is Intermediate Mid or higher. See the World Languages CDM Information document for details.
