Meeting GLE Requirements through External Exams
Per SBE Policy GRAD-007, students can meet the English and World Languages requirements for the Global Language Endorsement (GLE), North Carolina’s Seal of Biliteracy, in one of three ways:
External Exams: English vs. World Languages
Students may meet GLE requirements for both English and World Languages via an external exam, though score expectations differ by subject:
-
English: Each approved exam has a specific qualifying score that demonstrates minimum required proficiency.
-
World Language: A minimum proficiency level of Intermediate Mid is required, though some external exams can document higher proficiency levels.
PSUs, students, and families can visit the approved external exam lists linked below for English and World Languages to explore exam vendors, understand how exam scores correspond to the required proficiency level, and review details about test administration, proctoring, fees, and available practice tests.
Note: Funding for external exams, where needed, is determined locally. PSUs have reported using donations from community-based heritage or weekend schools, monies designated for assessment or literacy, payment from parents/caregivers, as well as other methods.
GLE Helpful Hints
-
Transcript automation:Students who earn the GLE have information for both languages automatically added to their transcript.
-
Proficiency earned: If a student meets the World Language requirement at Intermediate Mid, that proficiency level appears on the transcript, though higher levels of proficiency can be documented so that they appear on the transcript.
-
Entering scores: Schools/districts must enter qualifying scores in Infinite Campus so they appear in the automated identification system.
-
Dual benefit with CDM: External exams for World Languages can also be used in Phase 1 of CDM. A student may earn credit and qualify for a higher level World Language course placement, as well as satisfy the GLE requirement if their score is Intermediate Mid or higher. See the CDM Course Proficiency Outcomes document for details.
