Draft 1 Stakeholder Review and Feedback
The NCDPI K-12 Mathematics team is excited to announce the release of the first draft of proposed revisions to the K-12 Math Standard Course of Study. North Carolina State Board of Education policy specifies that the NC Department of Public Instruction will formally collect feedback on the proposed draft standards from educators, administrators, parents, students, institutions of higher education, business/industry representatives, national organizations, and other education agencies.
The purpose of this survey is to obtain input from all stakeholders regarding the proposed K-12 Math Standards to help inform any additional revisions, which may include changes, clarifications, additions, deletions, or replacements to the draft standards.
This process began with a review phase, which was conducted throughout the 2024-2025 school year. The review phase included gathering relevant research and analyzing data obtained through surveys, interviews, and focus groups. The data obtained was analyzed by the K-12 Math Standards Data Review Committee (DRC). The DRC completed a formal report summarizing the data, trends within the feedback, and any resulting recommendations. The report was provided to the Standards Writing Team as the basis for starting the revision process.
This first draft of the proposed 2023 K-12 Math Standards is based on the analysis in the DRC Report. The K-12 Math team requests your thoughtful input and comments on Draft 1 of the proposed K-12 Math academic standards. To help in reviewing the draft standards, the K-12 Math team is sharing several resources to provide additional background information. These include:

Focus Groups for NC ML/Title III Framework
The NCDPI Multilingual Learner/Title III Team is pleased to invite your Public School Unit (PSU) to take part in the upcoming ML/Title III Focus Groups. As part of our effort to design a comprehensive statewide framework that strengthens ML/Title III program quality and compliance, these focus groups will gather valuable insight into the current landscape of multilingual learner education in North Carolina.
We are asking PSU administrators and school leaders to select 1 representative for each applicable focus group. Representatives will receive up to eight guiding questions in advance to help them prepare responses that reflect their PSU’s unique needs and resources.

Your participation will ensure that this framework reflects the voices, expertise, and experiences of educators, leaders, and families across North Carolina!
Survey for NC ML/Title III Framework
In addition to the discussion in Focus Groups, the ML/Title III Team is also looking for broader data collection in the ML/Title III Field Survey. This survey will be open until December 1, and we encourage PSUs to share the link with schools, parents, and community members.
This statewide survey will gather input from educators, administrators, and partners across all regions to better understand current practices, challenges, and priorities in supporting multilingual learners. The insights collected will directly inform the design of a comprehensive framework that strengthens program quality, compliance, and equitable access for MLs across North Carolina.

K-12 Mathematics Content Series
The NCDPI K-12 Mathematics Content Series continues in the 2025 Fall Season. Teachers, teacher leaders, coaches, district staff, and administrators have responded with overwhelmingly positive feedback. To broaden the scope of this opportunity, this season features sessions designed for K-12 Mathematics overall, as well as, sessions designed for specific grade bands. Sessions are focused on mathematics content and pedagogy while highlighting practitioners in the field. Participants earn 2 contact hours per session. Each session meets virtually for 90 minutes with a 30-minute asynchronous reflection time. The information and resources shared are both beneficial and useful.

North Carolina Mathematics Coaching Network
Research has shown that effective mathematics coaching supports the continuous development of mathematics teachers and impacts student learning. With this in mind, the NCMCN is being formed as a state wide professional learning community for coaches who support math teachers in grades K-12.
As a coach of mathematics teachers, you can participate in the NCMCN through four free open sessions throughout the year. Everyone is invited to attend according to your schedule. Sessions will be led by the NCDPI math team and university partners.

Effective Content Instruction for ML Students in Writing

In this session, participants will explore research-based strategies for planning and scaffolding writing tasks across content areas. Together, we will analyze texts to uncover key language features and practice ways to explicitly teach the language functions that drive academic writing. NC K-12 Math Standards Resource Hub
The NCDPI K-12 Mathematics team has created a repository to provide a variety of resources for supporting school leaders, administrators, educators, and parents/caregivers. The NC K-12 Math Standards Resource Hub houses the standards, communications, and recommended resources related to the implementation of the North Carolina K-12 Math Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS).
The hub includes:
- K-12 standards and unpacking documents
- Previous PD presentations, recordings, and resources
- At Home Resource Guides for parent/guardians
- Math Options Chart aligned to post graduation plans
- STEM Content Integration
Math educators are encouraged to browse, reference, download, share, discuss, and adapt resources.
